Tortured Earth is a class-less, level-less role playing game designed to enable characters to shift from one story setting to another without loss of skills or abilities. The Game Guide provides new players with GM and Player information, as well as a Creature Manual. The system integrates science fiction, fantasy, and horror scenarios into a seamless mechanic. GMs wishing to experiment with story settings other than fantasy, or wish to integrate elements of other genre into their existing settings, may do so without overpowering - or underpowering - the introduced elements. Creatures are designed using a scaling system based on the total skill points of the character group. This method strips away the need for creature encounters based on levels and insures the group always encounters creatures on par with their current abilities. GMs award Skill Points based on story accomplishments, rather than hack-and-slash advancement. Players accomplishing story objectives receive Skill Points. Players wishing to cause mass mayhem may certainly do so, though do not receive points if it does not advance the story forward.

The base mechanic of the system uses a roll-off method in which the attacker sets the defending roll while the defender must exceed the established score. The primary storyline is apocalyptic while secondary storylines may be pure fantasy, science fiction, or horror. The 2.0 version introduces mechanics allowing players to advance and experiment with superhero-style character builds.The Game Guide is the complete book required to play the game and is divided into GM and Player sections. The main Guide includes 6 player races and all skills found required to begin character development. This book is designed to operate in conjunction with the Tortured Earth Supplemental Expansions.

Tortured Earth supplemental sourcebooks provide players and GMs with new spells, potions, creatures, player species, and more. \nSummoning Spells! Players can summon companion creatures (pets) or creatures of essence to do their bidding. Casters can summon swarms of insects, small and large animals, massive treefolk, or undead articulates. These spells expand with each book and are directly tied to the description of the summoned creature.\nNew Fusion and Unlock Abilities! Each book contains new abilities built on the mechanics described in the Game Guide. \nPlayer Species! Expanding on the original six species found in the Game Guide, each book offers a broader choice of playable species designed to fit into the Tortured Earth multiverse.\nMonsters! The supplemental materials include a wide range of monsters spanning Sci-fi, Fantasy, Horror, and Contemporary settings.\nDiseases! Supplementals also include a range of mental and physical diseases designed to add strife to any character's life.
