Gene Minshall was born, raised, and educated in a state he admits is a little off the beaten path. A small town (pop. 300) in an area of Montana called by the National Geographic as the "Last Real America." He has taken this environment of integrity, realistic values and straight thinking and applied them to his chosen profession: TELEVISION JOURNALISM. Having worked as a producer, reporter, and news director for 15 years, Minshall was honored as a Knight Fellow for the United States State Department. Consulting television stations in the 3rd World, Minshall encourage less bias and propaganda in their newscasts. Viewers, previously under the communist thumb received untainted and professionally presented newscasts (often for the first time) under Minshalls guidance. In this publication, (his third book), The BLISS & BLUES of TV NEWS, Gene once again continues his efforts to share his thoughts, experiences, and knowledge in an attempt to shake up our traditional Broadcast News Media with his Ten Terrible Truths of Local TV News. This book was written to inspire a new balance of newscasts currently replete with crime and accidents, with stories of hope and survival for a greater day.

Planning a date doesn't have to be a production, but it should have some thought behind it. A lot of my guy friends would get really excited for their date, but then always end up pulling from the same grab bag of dates they always did. If you're going to ask a girl out you should plan something that shows you're actually excited to be there with her. It doesn't take much, just a little pre-planning. That's where this book comes in. It can be hard coming up with a good date on your own. The lines between trite, original, and tried-too-hard are painfully thin,which is why I compiled my best dates in this book. They're probably not what might come to mind right away when planning a date, and that's the point. There are a variety of different ideas that cover a lot of Boston, and a lot of them are adaptable to whatever location works for you. I came up with these ideas from dates I went on or from friend dates, and the reason they work is because they're all things you could do with a friend and they'd still be the fun. That's the trick. You may click, and you may not. But if you take the weight off and approach it like you're just going to hang out, at least you'll have a good time. So take these ideas, do the leg work and forethought required of a good date, and make it yours. You don't have to tell her I'm providing you with the idea, because you're making it happen.

In Breaking News/Broken News, famed news producer Gene Minshall provides an analysis of the television news business from an insider's perspective.  For many years, Minshall directed the daily flow of information, worked with management and their budgets while, at the same time conferring with consultants hired to help increase ratings and viewer interest.  Serving as a reporter and producer as well as writer and director of scores of documentaries exploring issues and interests of the day, Minshall joined the rising chorus who applaud the incredible contributions progressive news departments are providing to better inform the public.  In addition to national and local TV news, Minshall documented ethics for the International Center for Journalists, worked in Albania with radio and TV stations on ethics and served as a Knight Fellow with foreign assignments.  He was also appointed by the United States State Department to assist Third World country's media centers to be responsive to public apprehensions by presenting news without bias and propaganda.  Minshall is proud of his profession but laments practices that work against fully informing the public.  He desires to promote a conversation to close the gap between "what TV stations are promoting" and "what exactly is presented to viewers."

If you want a career in today’s entertainment and music industry you’ve got to understand how much the business has changed over the past few years. It’s not the same old let’s pick up a guitar, learn how to sing, put on a few local shows, get discovered, sign a label deal, and become rich and famous. It’s better than the old business by far for both artists and business minded people who want to break into the business, and yet, it’s more difficult to make serious money, as it’s almost impossible to sell albums. Digital devices and personal consumer preferences, for streaming music and movies online, has also saved consumers billions of dollars and they can acquire it anywhere, anytime, and for free or pay a low subscription rate. However, many in the industry use the term value gap to describe the differences between the money generated from an album sale and the 1,500 streams that are supposed to equal one unit sold. It’s a numbers game and as consumers continue to stream music products the gap will continue to narrow. And streaming is increasing at nearly a double rate, which means in a few years, we’ll be back to the profits the industry generated in 1999.In today’s world, inventions, innovation, and digital technology have reinvented almost everything we do, every day of our lives. Netflix, Spotify, e-books and all the other Internet-based programming we consume are actually in competition for our spare time and available dollars. However, labels are coming back as they are estimated to annually invest $4.5 billion worldwide in Artist & Repertoire (the Department of A&R), responsible for the signing of new acts, songs, studio recordings and artist development) combined with Marketing (The Department of Marketing), which is responsible for distribution, promotions, publicity and sales of the signed acts. And while each deal is different, the investments paid by labels for advances, recordings, video production, tour support, and promotion, is between $500,000 to $2,000,000 to break a new act into the music market.The three major labels (Sony Music, Warner Music Group, and Universal Music Group) in 2016 (as reported in 2017) gross revenue streams are music publishing, digital downloads, streaming, physical sales and multiple rights management. Two things to consider, the streaming, and digital right management are connected to 360 deals and the future trends in revenues point toward significant decreases in physical and digital download sales and increases in streaming. Already in early 2017, streaming revenues had passed physical sales revenues indicating how quickly the revenue figures are changing. The labels are also in the touring or live ticket game as they have provided the front money (tour support) for the act to start their concert business and they receive 10-12% of all the artist’s gross revenues.
