All animals, from protozoans to primates, utilize energy in every aspect of their lives. Metabolic processes transform energy within the living cells. Individual animals obtain energy with their food and use it in a variety of ways. Populations and communities pass energy through their ecosystem. The growing interest in animal energetics is therefore seen in three major areas of zoology-biochemistry, physiology and ecology. We have tried to describe the main features of almost all these aspects, with the aim of arousing or feeding an interest in energetics in general as well as supplying some information on particular parts of the subject. The substantial list of references is intended to guide the reader to larger or more specialized works. In covering such a wide field in so small a compass we will have been guilty of over-generalizations, but we find when teaching energetics, whether physiological or ecological, that students easily lose sight of the principles if all statements are hedged about with every relevant condition and exception. We have drawn examples from a wide range of animals, avoiding over-emphasis on mammals, but we have tended to favour those groups with which we are more familiar. We are grateful to many people for helpful discussions and in particular to Kenneth Denbigh, Derek Miller and John Stirling for valuable criticisms of parts of the manuscript. There is at present a surge of interest in plant biochemistry, as the gaps in our knowledge are seen as a major impediment to progress, especially in such areas as genetic engineering. Techniques for the transfer of genes in plants are well advanced, and the question has become not how to transfer the genes, but which genes should be moved. To be able to answer this question, it is necessary to know the pathways, and to have purified and characterized the enzymes that catalyse these pathways. In the cases that have been studied, fundamental differences between the biochemistry of plants and animals have been found. This book discusses the subject of plant energetics as it is known now, and compares our knowledge of plants with that of animals. This book should be of interest to advanced undergraduates and postgraduates in plant biochemistry and physiology.

In the preface to the first edition ofthis book, we expressed a conviction that there was a need for a short book that highlighted important advances in the new discipline of plant molecular biology. The rapid development of this topic has been brought about by the recognition of the unique properties of plants in the study of growth and development together with the application of recombinant DNA techniques to tackle these problems. Plant cells contain DNA in nuclei, plastids and mitochondria, and so ofTer the unique challenge of studying the interaction of three separate genetic systems in a single organism.
