Jiang Zhi’s flowers ‘die’ before our eyes –set aflame, they are on the brink of death, not yet devoured. It is this ‘decisive moment’ we see –a fleeting, brazen instant, of mortality in a nutshell. Time is caught in its flight: each photograph is a powerful memento mori, like a time capsule, a miniature image of death. Jiang Zhi’s photography explores the metaphysics of mortality. He makes us reconsider the ephemeral, the evanescent nature of things in the face of death. Death and love are melted together like Eros and Thanatos, but here, beauty overrides the macabre. In a very subtle and nuanced way, Jiang Zhi infuses this curse of death with touches of elegance –the flowers are almost dead, and at the same time peculiarly splendid. Death is around the corner, awaits them, but they don’t care, or at least, they resist—in vain. Like a vanity, each snapshot is also a painting.

Born in Sichuan in 1955, Xu Bing is widely considered to be among the most important Chinese artists working today. The Phoenix, the mythical bird that crosses civilizations and eras, has a central role in the artist's latest productions. Xu Bing’s Phoenixes -- made of random common materials used in building construction -- are allegories of the tremendous changes that occurred in China since the opening of the country and illustrate the contrasts within its "renaissance." Xu Bing will be unveiling his new Phoenix at the 2015 Venice Biennale this May. His piece will be located over the water between two boathouses at the Pavilion at Arsenale – Giardino delle Vergini. The 56th International Art Exhibition, titled All the World’s Futures and curated by Okwui Enwezor, will be open to the public from 9 May to 22 November 2015 at the Giardini and Arsenale venues.

Born in Shanghai, the mutations of his city have given him the inspiration for his highly detailed photo montages, iconic witnesses of an ever changing world where the city takes over nature, skyscrapers replace trees, and cranes continuously reshape the environment. Drawing inspiration from Chinese traditional ink-wash paintings, his works put him at the center of the emerging posttraditional movement. Ecologic fables swarming with detail, Yang Yongliang’s photo montages link China’s past with its unique modernity, and point forward toward a disconcerting, disorienting future.
