Aleister Crowley (1875-1947) was uniquely qualified to produce a translation of Lao-tzus Tao Te Ching. He was called the finest English metrical poet of his generation by some of his contemporaries, and his work is anthologized in the Oxford Book of Mystical Verse. He was also a profound and experienced magician, mystic, and philosopher, trained in western esotericism, Hermeticism, the Qabalah and more traditional western philosophy, but with a deep and abiding interest in the ancient philosophies of the Orient.   Crowley traveled widely in the East, and he actually walked across Southern China in 1906. His first-hand experience of the Orient made him one of the first students in the West to grasp oriental philosophy on its own terms, without a Eurocentric or Judeo-Christian cultural bias.  The Chinese scholar Hellmut WIlhelp acknowledged the primacy of Crowleys work in Taoist studies. Crowley had no Chinese, and his translation is that of a poet interpreting the dry and scholastic translation of James Legge, as Ezra Pound would later do with the Confucian Analects. He contributes and autobiographical and critical introduction that discusses his religious philosophy and his lifelong attraction to Taoism, and his extensive notes and commentary to his translation help to amplify the meaning of the Chinese classic.   This edition includes Crowleys verse translation of the Ching-ching Ching (Liber XXI, The Classic of Purity) as an appendix.  This edition includes an editorial forward by Hymenaeus Beta, Frater Superior of O.T.O., as well as bibliography and index.

It is said that history is written by the victors. Does that make them even partly right? Or, more to the point, even a little interesting? Of course not.  This unique look at history begins with an alternative Genesis as it were, elaborately recounting the birth of human civilization through the vehicle of ancient Egyptian deities, albeit in light of the most recent knowledge on archaeology, anthropology, linguistics, sociology, comparative religion, political science, and general history. It moves quickly but seamlessly to Greece via Crete, revealing the relatively young age of Continental European (and by extension, all Western) culture, science, art, and religion, and their highly derivative nature--a point subtly repeated throughout this stunningly wide-ranging work.  As the title suggests, this is a book of contrasts, constantly comparing not only the Saints and the Sinners, but the East and the West, be the issues dealt with political or religious; in most cases, the one cannot be separated from the other. The phrase "I come not to bring peace, but to bring a sword" certainly summarizes the history of mainline Christianity. But did Jesus even exist? And if he did, was he just re-enacting ancient myths and repeating old sayings? And what of Mohammed? Was he a false prophet, the Last Prophet, or just our for profit?  The author does not presume to answer such questions, only to relate the events as they happened, the facts as they stand, even if many of them are little known ones, conspicuous by their absence in standard school history books. He purports to offer a self-critique of Western culture by a cultured Westerner, a task made all the more challenging by the current, precarious world political situation. Factual without being dry, educational without being condescending, Saints & Sinners debunks myths without destroying the mystery.

Though many books have ostensibly been written on Crowley's philosophy, this might well be the first one truly accessible to an intelligent reader with no prior or current interest in the occult--yet THE LAW OF THELEMA nowise pretends that one's True Will can be ascertained without the patient utilization of esoteric techniques.
In the tradition of Franz Hartmann's Life and Doctrines of Jacob Boehme (1891), the author organizes quotations from diverse works by Crowley into a set of themes, but mostly lets the Beast speak for himself. However, the author helps the reader parse through Crowley's unique combination of Western iconography and Eastern concepts, while showing how Thelema is similar to and different from other systematic methods of attainment.
Rather than turning himself and his readers into "centres of pestilence" by discussing the contents of Liber Legis, the author merely arranges the Prophet's own scattered comments into a coherent, carefully referenced whole. This book should thus also prove indispensable to anyone who genuinely wants to work Crowley's actual system, but may not have the time or resources to connect every last dot.
