In addition to discussing the use of hand tools such as planes, saws, chisels and measuring devices, Lukin describes the making of various basic items of furniture for the country house. Lukin,one of the most popular authors for the amateur mechanic of the nineteenth century, wrote extensively in both books and journal articles on the subjects of woodworking, wood turning, steam, mechanics and related topics. His many books remained in print for more than three decades.

This, the 1829 edition, is the only one to have the added eleven hand colored plates of furniture of the period. Baird, remained largely untouched for 75 years, a testimony to it's importance and relevance to the furniture making trades of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Complete Cabinet Maker And Upholsterer's Guide served as a primary reference book for use in the daily operations of a workshop. The book contains receipts for the compounding and application of finishing materials, descriptions of various forms of cabinetwork and upholstery, advice on how to maintain shop tools and recommendations on the care of furniture.
