Mulatu was the first Ethiopian jazz music-maker to study abroad and thus be exposed to Western musical trends. When he returned to Addis Ababa he pursued his dream of drawing on the musical heritage of his homeland a heritage that has been buffeted by Ethiopia s turbulent history to produce a unique, compelling blend of music: Ethiopian sounds with a twist . In the late 1960 s, his Ethio jazz introduced, among other new ideas, the Afro-Latin soul where he played conga, piano, vibraphone and innovative musical arrangements. These included compositions of popular Ethio jazz music which took on a modern, funk, jazz-infused quality that soon had recording companies knocking at his door.

Useful to both scholars and policymakers, Beyond Khartoum is a history of subnational government in Sudan from early times through 2010. Despite domination by its Northern Arabic-speaking elite, Sudan has a long and varied history of governmental organization at subnational levels, compared with most African and Middle Eastern states. In a highly charged atmosphere of regional pressures, economic disparities and ethnic and religious difficulties, significant demands for subnational recognition and participation have often challenged the centralized uniformity of numerous regimes, both authoritarian and democratic. This work describes the contexts and structural features of Sudan s past systems and presents comparisons with other African systems, current options and future alternatives. Looking at the interactions of governmental units, political leaders, administrators and various segments of the public, this book notes three reoccurring themes. First, the Sudanese polity has swung back and forth between centralization and decentralization. Second, external influences have profoundly affected sub-national politics. Finally, the interlocking issues of trust, function, poverty and conflict are problems that have shaped all Sudanese systems. Cases studies of two marginalized areas, the Northern Region in the early 1980s and Kajo Keji County in 2004, are used to illustrate and exemplify these issues. With more than 2.5 million Sudanese killed in conflicts over the past half-century, such an inquiry has become increasingly relevant and urgent, as significant changes in power relationships and policies have become unavoidable. Given Sudan s pivotal position in regional conflicts, its cultural diversity, its past instability and more recent oil wealth, an understanding of subnational politics is essential to fully appreciate the dynamics behind the news emanating from Khartoum, Darfur, Southern Sudan and beyond.

BEYOND KHARTOUM: A History of Subnational Government in Sudan

Duse Mohamed Ali was born in Alexandria, Egypt, to an Egyptian father and a Sudanese Mother. He attended King s College of London. In 1885 at age of nineteen, he started a career as a stage actor that lasted for twenty-four years. He was also in the company of Herbert Beerbohm Tree and in Mrs. Langtry's Antony and Cleopatra production, at the Royal Princess Theatre, London. Mr. Ali also toured England, Ireland and Scotland. He produced Othello and The Merchant of Venice at Hull, Yorkshire in 1902, playing the parts of Othello and the Prince of Morocco, and winning the plaudits of the British Press. Among his credits as a playwright are The Jews Revenge produced at the Royal Surrey Theatre in London, in 1903; A Cleopatra Night at Dundee in 1907; and the Lily of Bermuda, a musical comedy which he produced at Theatre Royal, Manchester, in 1909. Every production of his received the enthusiastic welcome of the British and American Press, but perhaps the most outstanding of his productions and performances was A Daughter of Judah at the Empire Theatre, Glasgow, in 1906. Reviewing the production, the London Daily Telegraph wrote: "Duse Mohamed is an actor of outstanding merit." He also produced many plays in America where he won fame as an actor. He founded the Hull Shakespeare Society of which Sir Henry Irving was the first President and the Anglo-Ottoman Society, London which included Lords Newton, Lamington, Stourton and Mowbray. He founded and was Secretary of the Indian Moslem Soldiers' Widows' and Orphans' War Fund, in 1915, and among the patrons were Consuelo, the Duchess of Marlborough, the Right Hon. D. Lloyd George, Sir Edward Grey, Lord and Lady Lamington, Lord and Lady Newton, the Marquis and Marchioness of Crew, Mrs. H.H. Asquith, Sir Austen and Lady Chamberlain, Lord Curzon, and almost all the members, of the British Cabinet. In 1909 he began a new career in journalism, publishing articles on Egyptian nationalism and the oppression of Africa in New Age, an influential socialist weekly literary journal. In 1911 he published a short history of Egypt, In the Land of the Pharaohs, reputedly the first history of that country written by an Egyptian in English. The book received critical acclaim, catapulting him into international prominence. In 1912 in London, he founded the African Times and Orient Review, a political, cultural, and commercial journal that advocated pan-African-Asian nationalism and was a forum for African intellectuals and activists from all over the world. In 1921 Duse travelled to the United States where he briefly worked for Garvey s Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA), contributing articles on African issues to Negro World and heading a department of African Affairs. In 1931 he left the United States for West Africa, settling in Lagos, Nigeria. He founded and became the editor of The Comet, which in 1933 became Nigeria s largest weekly. He died in Lagos in 1945.

In Darfur, JEM and the Khalil Ibrahim Story, the reader is offered a vivid portrait of the President of the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) of the Sudan. The author unobtrusively facilitates the encounter, withdrawing to leave the reader in direct engagement with Khalil in the narration of his life. As this account of Khalil s childhood shows, he was destined to endure his fortune and grow up in an environment that was rife with poverty, disease, famine and thirst. Having lost his father in infancy, Khalil s guardians arrived at a survival strategy whereby Khalil was to remain illiterate and take to herding animals, affording his siblings the chance to attend school. Little did the family know that Khalil was endowed with a tremendous ability to transform even the most piteous chance into a promising opportunity. Following derogatory comments by some of his contemporaries about his illiteracy, Khalil decided, without informing his family, to attempt enrolment in school. His gamble paid off and he left the herding world behind. Khalil joined the primary school with virtually no knowledge of Arabic as used in school and a tribal name (Hinain) that bore no relationship to his current name. The Arab dominated culture of Sudan stipulated that he abandon his original name and discard his Zaghawa language in favour of Arabic, a rule that was enforced by public punishment in the school. As he progressed through the school system, Khalil never parted company with the aspirations of his people for a dignified life away from poverty, famine and illiteracy. In his pursuit of his people s dreams, Khalil joined the Sudanese Socialist Union (SSU) and later the Islamic Front. Like the SSU, the Islamic Front also promised to fulfil similar hopes for poor people in Darfur and beyond. Khalil s journey with the Islamic Front led him to support the current government, taking several State Ministerial posts and fighting its jihadist wars. Throughout his political career, Khalil knew that the Sudanese system was flawed. Sudan was, and still is, ruled by a minority River Nile elite whose hegemony remains, irrespective of the nature of government in Khartoum. As Khalil was later to learn, this hegemony could not be changed via peaceful means. The Islamic Front was the last staging post that Khalil and many others embraced before he helped to form JEM and take up arms against the very government for which he once fought. As the biography of a once insignificant camel herder boy who rose to become a major geopolitical figure, this book provides key insights that will prove useful for readers interested in African governance, development, political systems, state formation, decolonisation, delivery of justice, human rights discourse, peace and conflict studies and multiculturalism. Activists, NGOs, bilateral and multilateral actors in particular, not to mention African politicians in general, will find this book indispensible in their efforts to bring peace to Darfur and the Sudan at large. Product Description This book describes the phonological, morphological and lexical variation of Amharic dialects by using both natural oral text and elicited data. In phonetic inventory of Amharic dialects, seventy-six possible consonant segments including three implosives and one velar fricative have been identified from the recorded audio-video corpus. Some of these segments are peculiar to specific areas and some are shared by more dialect areas. The study also shows variations on morphological and lexical levels. In previous studies, Amharic dialects have been classified into five namely, Gojjam, Gondar, Wollo, North Showa and Addis Ababa. The current study does not support such classification. Without any geographical barrier or distance, there would be great phonological, morphological and lexical variations. The case of Debark and Dembiya is an example for such incident. For example, substituting /kʼ/ by [tʃʼ], which is discussed as a feature of the whole Gojjam area, does not cover even the whole east Gojjam. Although, it is widely used in Sinan, Degasegnin and part of Bibugn areas, it rarely occurs in Debre Marikos area. Furthermore, it is absent in nearby districts like Debrework, Bichena, Mertolemariam, Mota and Innesesar midir. Areas like Amanuel, Denbecha and Feresbet of Gojjam, Debark and its neighboring areas of Gondar and some areas of south Wollo, despite the geographical barriers and inaccessible distance, mostly speak similar varieties. Similarly, most features that are found in Debark and Dabat areas of North Gondar are not found in other areas of North Gondar such as Koladiba and Alefatakusa. Varieties used in Southern Gondar are mostly similar to those used in north Wollo than those used in north Gondar. Similarly, varieties used in west of South Wollo especially Amhara Saint area are much similar to those used in North Shewa than those used in the areas of eastern South Wollo. Furthermore, except for the people who live in Dembecha and Feresbet, the West Gojjam dialect is similar to the Addis Ababa dialect. Also, the features which are typically known as Gojjam dialect in previous studies are found in Eastern Gojjam. In North Gondar, Debark, Dabat and Wogera have different phonological features from Koladiba, Alafatakusa, Chilga and Armachoho. Based on the current data, it is reasonable to group South Gondar with North Wollo, South Wollo with North Shewa. North Gondar shall be considered as a separate dialect. The Addis Ababa dialect, i.e. the standard dialect, which may comprise the varieties spoken in various cities throughout the country should be considered as a distinct dialect. East Gojjam and the varieties spoken in Dembecha and Feresbet can be categorized as a single but separate dialect from the others. The latter two are located in West Gojjam. With the exception of those two locations, the variety spoken in West Gojjam is mostly similar to the Addis Ababa one.
