An Account of an Ongoing Personal Discourse and its manifestations in Dance. Simone Forti is a dancer who has always forged her own path. She arrived in New York in the early 60's from California. She brought with her a series of pieces that proved to be of serious influence on the development of "post modern" dance and sculpture in years to come. Her "dance-constructions" were based on a concern with bodies in action, the movement not being stylized or presented for its visual line but rather as a physical fact. The artist traces the development of her work intuitively rather than chronologically, including narratives about a time of participation in the drug culture that sheds light on the changes in her dancing. The book includes drawings, "dance reports" (short descriptions of events whose movement made a deep impression on the author's memory), and documentary materials such as scores, descriptions, and photographic records of performances.

In a visual hip hop of high art, Dara Birnbaum used TV fragments of sitcoms and superheroes to mark a decisive moment of confluence between video art and television in the late 1970s. Manipulating appropriated images from a highly manipulative medium, she arrests moments of TV time and invites viewers to critique and deconstruct the power of mass media. Each documented video work analyzes a particular TV convention, such as reverse angle shots, the two-shot and insertions. With special effects from Wonder Woman, Birnbaum points to television’s need for frequent transformation fantasies. Her intercuts in Pop-Pop Video: General Hospital/Olympic Women Speed Skating (1980) speak to “the totally homogeneous nature” of TV treatment in genres ranging from sporting events to daytime soap operas. Published in 1987 and edited by Benjamin H.D. Buchloh, this fourth volume in the Nova Scotia Pamphlets Series originated when Birnbaum was a visiting artist to NSCAD in 1980. Her provocative video works and multimedia installations are now considered among the most influential contributions to current discourse on art and television. Rough Edits also includes Norman M. Klein’s essay, “Audience Culture and the Video Screen,” and transcripts of Birnbaum’s New York interviews with video art distributors, staff at a non-profit alternative space, and curators responsible for successfully introducing video arts into two traditional high art institutions.

An essay by Peggy Gale introduces this transcription of historic talks by internationally known artists, recorded some 30 years ago at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Over the last two decades of the twentieth century, the Ceramic Arts Foundation (formerly the Institute for Ceramic History) presented International Ceramics Symposiums in New York, Toronto, London and Amsterdam, among other cities. In the course of that work, it fundamentally changed the approach of ceramics to the field's modern history, to scholarship, and to criticism. The first symposium was held in conjunction with the groundbreaking exhibition, A Century of Ceramics in the United States 1878-1978, in Syracuse, New York, and opened with a keynote address by Clement Greenberg. The most recent attracted 3,500 participants, 65 national delegations and involved an arts festival spanning 73 museums and galleries. In 3 Works, photographer and critic Martha Rosler braids together three classic, newly relevant pieces tracing the ways in which photography's aesthetic conventions and social practices fail or succeed in generating socially meaningful work--work that not only takes into account the political conditions within which it was produced and assumes social and political responsibility but also activates the viewer. The title three works are The Restoration of High Culture in Chile, a 1972 short fiction piece-cum-essay that examines the degrees of political anaesthesia and corruption a successful adaptation to high culture implies, The Bowery in two inadequate descriptive systems, a 1974 photo work in which contemporary urban photography's capacity to continue documentary photography's historical work is questioned, and in, around, and afterthoughts, a 1981 critical essay exploring these questions more systematically and attempting to develop criteria to define contemporary photographic activities as meaningful social practice.

The crafts have long occupied a marginal role in Modernist discourse. NeoCraft: Modernity and the Crafts

Over the past 30 years, Canadian artists Carole Condé and Karl Beveridge have developed a collaborative practice of working with organized labor to reveal the increasingly complex relationships between paid work and global, ethical and environmental concerns. This volume, with 112 color reproductions of Condé and Beveridge's major projects, is the first comprehensive examination of the pair's influential work. Their collaboration began in 1976 when--through their involvement with the New York collaborative Art &amp; Language and the nascent Conceptual art movement--they turned from solo production and formalist art-making to social engagement, which combines left-oriented discourses with the artists' formal and technical innovations, and which presaged the currently prevalent practice in which art-making is understood as an articulation of human conditions and a tool of community formation. This volume includes a chronology of their practice and essays by Jan Allen, D'Arcy Martin, Declan McGonagle, Allan Sekula, Dot Tuer and Bruce Barber and an extensive interview by Clive Robertson.

Canadian artist Micah Lexier has built an international reputation working in a variety of media, often making work with numerical themes, such as 1995's "Self-portrait as a Lucite Cube Divided Proportionally a (Red) Volume Representing Life Lived and a (Clear) Volume Representing Life to Come, Based on Statistical Life Expectancy." Over the past three decades, he has also produced a significant body of multiple materials to be distributed to viewers, including prize ribbons, printed balloons, custom-minted coins and individually numbered cards. Micah Lexier: I'm Thinking of a Number is a survey of the artist's invitations, posters, book works, T-shirts, boxed sets and other multiples produced between 1980 and 2010. It includes a multiple created by the artist for this publication--a letterpress sheet of four stickers tipped in as the final work itemized by the monograph.
