It was formed in 1983 at a time when works from this pivotal American art style were just coming to the fore and examples were easily available and relatively inexpensive. This landmark exhibition was originally organized in 1998 and at that time toured museums across the country: opening in New York; continued to Chicago; Tennessee; and Oakland, California. The exhibition traveled once again beginning in 2008 to Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Ohio and Georgia before returning to Irvine.

The Hungarian-born artist Joseph Kleitsch (1882-1931) has been hailed as one of the outstanding California plein-air painters of his time.
