Ed Ruscha: Industrial Strength is published on the occasion of the artist's completion of "Industrial Strength Sleep," a 23-foot by 9-foot tapestry created at The Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia and based on his 1989 painting of the same name. In his introductory essay, curator Paul Schimmel explains the artist's process: "Though Ruscha has consistently pushed the boundaries of his own iconography, which typically comprises concrete words and phrases, it is in fact his range of materials and processes that has characterized the ever-changing and restless nature of his practice." The piece--which took three years to complete--was produced at Flanders Tapestries in Wielsbeke, Belgium; Mary Anne Friel, Master Printer at The Fabric Workshop, oversaw production. The publication also includes an essay by art historian and critic Thomas E. Crow. Over the course of his nearly 40-year career, Ruscha, who was the United States representative at the 51st Venice Biennale in 2005, has consistently used the expansive landscape of Los Angeles--where he has lived and worked since the late 1950s--in his paintings as a backdrop for the often humorous vernacular phrases with which he communicates a particular urban experience.

Perhaps the best-known Chinese artist of his generation, Cai Guo-Qiang (born 1967) is famed for his ambitious explosion projects and large, theatrical sculptures and installations. Fallen Blossoms presents his newest works, documenting a 2009-2010 exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and The Fabric Workshop, with 75 full-color reproductions of the explosion project Fallen Blossoms and the gunpowder drawing "Time Scroll." Also included are photographs of the ongoing work "Time Flies Like a Weaving Shuttle," which involves the labors of five Tujia weavers in residence at the Fabric Workshop, weaving on traditional looms, and which is in progress for the duration of the Fabric Workshop exhibition. Fallen Blossoms contains an introduction by Marion Boulton Stroud, artist's statement by Guo-Qiang and essays by Carlos Basualdo, David Elliott and Wang Mingxian.

This catalogue accompanies an exhibition of a new work by Sarah Sze (born 1969) at The Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia. Sze's immense and intricate site-specific works are akin to drawings in space, manipulating architectural spaces to profoundly affect the way they are viewed. This work was installed on three floors of the museum, virally traversing the exhibition spaces and creating a narrative that unfolds as viewers navigate the galleries and experience Sze's reflections on time, exploration of movement and investigation of materials. Each gallery floor presents a singular experience, yet viewing all three spaces is cumulative, akin to experiencing separate acts in a theatrical production. The catalogue illustrates multiple views of each gallery floor. Along with essays by Jonathan Gilmore and Jeffery Kastner, this volume includes a 2011 essay on Sze by the late philosopher and art critic Arthur C. Danto.
