Daniel Ogden's Polygamy, Prostitutes and Death, first published in 1999, has established itself as the principal guide to the history of royal women and their court intrigues throughout the Hellenistic period. The author supplies clear narrative and analysis of the strategic in-fighting involving the numerous Cleopatras, Laodices and Stratonices, their female rivals, their male relatives, and enemies. Ogden's book does much to establish the importance of royal women for the increasingly-studied Hellenistic age.

Polygamy, Prostitutes and Death: The Hellenistic Dynasties

As the centre of a large and dynamic empire, Rome was a magnet for voluntary visitors and the destination for huge numbers of foreign slaves. Noy discusses the reaction of Roman citizens to the influx, particularly to the foreign military population which was constantly changing, and Rome's dependence on its slaves. The last section of the book examines the daily life of a foreigner in Rome with the influence of his native culture and religion on his Roman life and the numerous problems he would encounter, particularly with housing and employment. The origin of immigrants is shown to extend from Gaul through Greece to Asia Minor and North Africa. This is a comprehensive and accessible book which includes numerous accounts of individual lives and tables which illustrate more general trends.

From c.550 BC until her defeat at the battle of Leuktra in 371 BC, Sparta was a dominant force in the Greek world. This has traditionally ben explained by Sparta's egalitarian and militaristic society. Hodkinson's accessible and detailed study of Sparta's ruling classes shows how a new citizen organisation was established in the 6th and 5th centuries BC in response to the great discrepancy between rich and poor in Sparta which had caused a succession of civil wars. The book first discusses what Sparta ideally represented to the classical and modern worlds before considering the realities of Spartan landownership and private property and wealth. Hodkinson demonstrates that severe inequality never left Sparta but instead contributed to the rapid decline in the state's fortunes following the defeat of 371 BC.
