James Mark Baldwin (1861-1934) was one of American psychology's greatest contributors, both professionally and intellectually. Professionally, he founded experimental laboratories at the Universities of Toronto and Princeton, established two important journals: The Psychological Review and The Psychological Bulletin, and served as President of the American Psychological Association. Intellectually, Baldwin was one of the field's most prolific authors and quite possibly its most sophisticated thinker. Over the course of his career, he published twenty-two books and approximately one-hundred-fifty articles. Among his publications were the field's first well-controlled experimental studies of infant behavior and a work, Social and Ethical Interpretations in Mental Development. Between 1901 and 1905 he edited a three volume Dictionary of Philosophy and Psychology that is still one of the best sources for turn-of-the-century thought in these disciplines. This led directly to his receiving Oxford University's first honorary doctorate of science. Baldwin's biosocial approach introduced a level of complexity in conceptualization of the mind, its evolutionary origins, ontogenetic development, and sociocultural formation that went far beyond the prevailing thought of the period. He addressed topics as varied as the nature of developmental and evolutionary mechanisms, the relationship between reason and reality, the genesis of logic, the value of aesthetic experience, and the nature and development in children of habit, imitation, creative invention, altruism, egoism, morality, social suggestibility, social self, self-awareness, theory of mind, and enculturation. His use and in some cases introduction of concepts such as multiplicity of self, ideal self, self-esteem, assimilation, accommodation, primary circular reaction, genetic logic, genetic epistemology, and social heredity exerted a formative influence on later scholars such as George Herbert Mead, Jean Piaget, Lev S. Vygotsky, and Lawrence Kohlberg. In Development and Evolution, Baldwin had arrived at a clear conception of the mechanism mediating the influence of individual adaptations on the course of phylogenetic evolution. As he described it in an autobiographical chapter written toward the end of his life, the theory of organic selection involved the claim that: "natural selection operating on "spontaneous variations" is sufficient alone to produce determinate evolution (without the inheritance of acquired adaptations or modifications), since - and this is the new point - in each generation variations in the direction of, or "coincident" with, the function to be developed will favor the organisms possessing them, and their descendants will profit by the accumulation of such variations. Thus the function will gradually come to perfection. In other words, the individual organism's accommodations, made through learning, effort, adaptation, etc., while not physically inherited, still act to supplement or screen the congenital endowment during its incomplete stages, and so give the species time to build up its variations in determinate lines." Analysis of Vertebrate Populations

This book was first published in 1977 and is widely recognized as a classic in the field. It is the "bible" for wildlife managers everywhere. It is an introduction to the methods and analysis of vertebrate populations for ecologists and wildlife managers as well as students of these subjects. A wide range of examples drawn from mammals and birds in different parts of the world is used to illustrate these methods. The book shows how population analysis can be applied to practical problems of wildlife management such as reducing a population, stimulating it to increase or taking from it a sustained yield. In order to make this complex subject as simple as possible, the methods for analysis described in this book are those which use elementary algebra and statistics rather than complex mathematics. Graeme Caughley studied the interactions between large mammalian herbivores and the environments they occupy. The pattern of population growth that can be predicted theoretically from such a relationship is both complex and variable. The animals will either erupt, crash, and then converge to a more stable density, or the population may oscillate indefinitely, the densities of plants and animals being locked into a stable limit cycle. He argued that the dynamics of mammalian herbivore populations are comprehensible only in terms of an interactive relationship between the herbivores and vegetation. He further argued that efficient management of such systems requires an understanding of the underlying mechanisms whereby the animals react to the plants and in turn the plants react dynamically to the effects of grazing. He was best known for his contributions to the understanding of herbivore-vegetation dynamics in the New Zealand high country, the Himalayas, southern Africa and the semi-arid rangelands of Australia. His research was distinguished by rigorous design, execution and analysis, so that the conclusions had generality beyond the particular species studied. Since he chose topics that combined theoretical interest and practical application, he also influenced important management policies - deer populations in New Zealand, kangaroos in Australia and the conservation of large mammals in Africa and North America. He had a major influence on thinking and practice in the field of vertebrate ecology and wildlife management throughout the world.

First published in 1981, Dynamics of Large Mammal Populations was written by experts from four continents and six countries. The primary aim of Aquatic and Wetland Plants of the Southwestern United States by Donovan S. and Helen B. Correll is to enable the identification of fern and flowering plans in polluted and non-polluted aquatic and wetland habitats of the Southwestern United States (Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona). The basic requirement for inclusion was a plants ability to withstand a permanent or seasonally long submersion of at least its root system. In addition, plants classified as phreatophytes, or those plants whose deeply penetrating roots tap the groundwater, are included.

The "Gulf of Maine" is defined as an area from the Nantucket Shoals and Cape Cod in the west to Cape Sable in the east. The aim of the book was to provide a handbook for the easy identification of the fishes that occur in the Gulf of Maine, with summaries of what is known about the distribution and relative abundance together with information on the life history of each species. The authors used the 150-fathom boundary as the arbitrary offshore boundary, because this will exclude almost all "deep-sea" fishes which are numerous in the basin of the open Atlantic. 
Combining information gleaned from the literature as well as surveys from a large number of cruises, the volume covers the Cyclostomes, cartilaginous fishes, torpedoes, skates and rays and the bony fishes. The descriptions are as non-technical as is compatible with scientific accuracy and are limited to external features which will aid in identification in the field.
