This book examines the consultative process and what makes it effective when consulting to managers at institutions of higher education. Three case studies highlight issues, problems and solutions involving consulting firms and institutions of higher education that worked together during their consulting engagement. The cases allowed for the investigation and evaluation of the similarities and differences from one consulting engagement to another and one institutional experience to another. The results show that consultants and clients have a variety of perspectives, objectives, and expectations that must be considered to ensure the success of the engagement, and that consulting to institutions of higher education is a unique and at times complex process. The findings inform and recommend consulting strategies for effectively working with institutions of higher education.

This is the first book to study adult and child art students actually participating in courses designed with their needs in mind in universities and schools for the blind. In doing so, it uniquely delves into the topic of the culture of education and society and its affects on an understanding of blindness and the visual arts. Furthermore, through an analysis of individual and group behaviour, the book also introduces a new cultural model for studying blindness and disability, investigates the social influences on the nature of blindness and the treatment of people who are blind, and examines the influences that have affected the self belief of blind students and the way they create art. There are a number of books on the education of people who are blind or deaf. However, these are largely descriptive or based on experimental rather than observational or social research. Furthermore, books that have analysed blindness and the arts only analyse tactile perception in the education of students who are blind, not social and cultural factors. In addition, although there have been many books and articles analysing research on the perception of aesthetics and blindness, there are only two, one first published in the 1950s and now long out of print (Lowenfeld V &amp; Brittain WL, 1987), and the other published in 2003 (Axel E &amp; Levent N Eds., 2003) that consider the practice of this subject in depth. In particular, there have been no books solely addressing the culture of arts education by non-visual means. This book represents a unique study of the theory of blindness and the arts. In its first section it analyses traditional models of blindness and disability, finding that the history of disability is more a reflection of changes in society towards its scientific study and classification. This book then presents a unique social psychological study of arts students, both children and adults, in situ, their understanding and practice of the arts, particularly the visual arts, and their reaction to the attitudes of their teachers, past and present. In researching the material for the book, the book’s author has collaborated with internationally renown charities in the area of blindness, galleries, exhibitions and art, such as Art Education for the Blind, New York and BlindArt, London, leading to interest from museum and gallery professionals in his work. Increasingly in mainstream discourse and rhetoric, there only seems to be one very serious and conservative face to Islam, Muslim communities, and their governments. Mainstream modern Islamic hermeneutics condemn homosexual orientations, sometimes with punishments as severe as death. Nevertheless, there were also instances in Muslim history, culture, and society where religiosity was playful not punitive, where the sexual body was inscribed with markers of pleasure not those of perdition. Every year, a number of preservice teachers graduate from Canadian universities, are hired into international positions, and spend their first year of teaching adapting to a new career and a new country. In addition to adjusting to the expectations of a new culture, they must also deal with the stress and joy of the first year of teaching in their own classrooms. Individually, each of these experiences is life changing; together they represent a unique experience. Many of these students remain in touch with professors and colleagues and tell stories rich with reflection and description of this first year in an unfamiliar country. Correspondence and conversations ring with professional and personal insights and choruses of "I wish I had known...". Editors Carole and Warnie Richardson's belief in the importance of hearing first-year teachers tell their stories of international teaching and learning is rooted in their own practice. As preservice professors who taught in the public school system on a small Caribbean island, they have experienced firsthand the challenges and rewards of living in an unfamiliar cultural environment and teaching in an educational system much different from their own. When they moved from Canada to the Cayman Islands to teach in the public system, their world changed as they adapted to a very different way of life, both personally and professionally. As seasoned educators, the editors were able to use their previous teaching experiences and ongoing reflective practice to identify and understand the dissonances, both internal and external, that resulted from working to fit into their new surroundings without losing themselves or compromising their philosophical beliefs about education. They were able to recognize that certain conflicts within their classrooms related as much to their students' and colleagues' anxiety about their expectations as to their own anxiety about what was expected of them. Conversations with each other and with expatriate teachers helped the editors to understand that their latent desire to implement their well-developed teaching practice in a new environment signaled an unconscious unwillingness to adapt to change; rather, they assumed that their new environment would adapt to them. As the editors began to acknowledge that change within their practice was vital to success in their new environment, they developed new expectations, new relationships, and new understandings that contributed to their becoming part of the culture and community. They also grew as educators as they began to appreciate that to effectively communicate with their students, they needed to validate the students' individual realities, even as they expected them to embrace theirs. The editors realized that there was no right way to adapt to change; the willingness to expand their ability to see through the eyes of others was the key to successful teaching and learning-regardless of the culture. The narratives in this book honor the voices of the individuals as they tell the personal and professional stories that live behind surveys and numbers. They speak frankly of the difficulties faced and triumphs experienced while beginning a career in a new country. Each of the stories chronicles a very different journey, and we hear these young teachers begin to reflect on their personal growth and come to a greater understanding of what it is to be a teacher-regardless of the country and the educational system. All of the stories reflect the personal backgrounds and styles of their authors, and it is in these differences that this book finds its strengths. Ultimately, these stories provide glimpses into the lives of first-year teachers who venture beyond the defined borders of their country-and their comfort. In this volume attesting to the Italian American influence on the United States, nine professors of Italian American studies and a curator of an ethnic museum provide original essays on the Italian American experience, using the theme bridges to Italy and bonds to America. Drawing from a wide variety of primary sources, such as census tracts, local directories, diaries, voting records, newspaper accounts, personal interviews and scholarly and polemical books and articles, the authors show how Italian Americans adapted, through work, prejudice, strife, and advancement, to the social and political life in America while still retaining an element of Italianita. Italian Americans were key components in the early years of jazz history in the 1920s and 1930s. This study adds some balance to the development of jazz by tracing the bonds that Italian Americans formed with Black musicians and their pioneering use of the guitar and violin. An obvious example of the theme of this book is a study of Italian prisoners of World War II, who were transported to the United States and settled in a camp in Texas. The author shows how they helped farmers by their work and how artists among them helped decorate a local church with paintings and murals. A comparison of the Italian and Mexican immigration to the United States shows the similarity and differences of these two groups over time. An examination of the proposition that Mexicans are like Italians is examined in detail. A bibliographical study of the "southern question" in Italian history shows the explosive forces that erupted during and after Italian unification. Italians and Italian Americans are still debating whether this incorporation of the Italian south into the kingdom of Italy was detrimental to the people who lived there and contributed to the massive emigration that followed. This study is an outgrowth of a desire by scholars to honor the passing of Professor Salvatore Mondello, coauthor of the national bestseller The Italian Americans. One of a few historians of Italian American immigration who appeared on the scene in the late 1950s and early 1960s he approached the subject with enthusiasm, passion, and a relentless search for relevant material marked by digging into primary sources, rooting out individuals who had lived through the immigrant experience and pouring over the contemporary accounts found in newspapers and magazines. Sal was one of the first to see the important link between railroads and Italian American settlements. He saw that the rail lines accelerated the Italians' movement beyond the large cities in the coastal areas. They used the railroads as the means to establish new lives in many urban and rural communities across the country.

A Trip to Niagara; or, Travellers in America, a three-act comedy, opened at New York's Bowery Theatre on November 28, 1828, for a long run. Scripted and later published by William Dunlap (1766-1839), the so-called "father of the American stage," this play offers a bounty to theater historians, dramatic critics, and all those interested in the American culture during Dunlap's lifetime. This study explores the Bowery, the play's moving diorama, the text, and the playwright, and emphasizes their interrelationships. This analysis of A Trip to Niagara as a theatrical event joins hands with dramatic criticism. An annotated transcript of the play is helpfully provided in the appendix of the book. This study contends that had there been no moving diorama, there would have been no play. Since William Dunlap called his text a "running accompaniment," it should be analyzed in terms of this function. The play's few critics have failed to do this. Hence, the interplay of the moving diorama (and conventional scenic backdrops) with the plot and characters comprises another significant segment of this study. This book makes significant contributions to studies of antebellum American theater, the Nationalist Period in American culture, and William Dunlap.

This book offers a detailed examination of Britain's role and influence in a pivotal period. The post-war international order had more or less taken shape by the mid-1950s, but much was still unsettled, and in these circumstances Britain made the most of its opportunities even while accepting that it could not realistically expect to remain-or ordinarily be treated as-one of the "Big Three" world powers with the USA and Soviet Union. Obviously, some adjustments were required in British priorities and methods, in view of changing pressures and needs both at home and abroad, but the continuing desire was to shore up Britain's position in those parts of the world that were of special importance to British prestige, power, strategy, prosperity, and security. In April 1957 the defence minister in the Conservative government of the time, Duncan Sandys, emphasized to the House of Commons that "whether we like it or not, we cannot go on devoting such a large part of our resources, and, in particular, of manpower, to defence." Sandys and his colleagues tried to find a balance between commitments and resources. How did they fare? Gradually, Britain did step back from some of its responsibilities overseas, but defence expenditure remained high as did the overall costs of maintaining a global role. Denis Healey, who served as secretary of state for defence in the Labour government of 1964-1970, later recalled that "when I left office, for the first time in its history, Britain was spending more on education than on defence." Britain had to compromise. It had to be content with a lesser role on the international stage. But did this mean that all influence was lost? Did Britain cease to be powerful? Were its wishes and opinions no longer respected by others? This book elucidates the motives behind key decisions, discusses their far-reaching consequences, and explains why some options were taken and others were rejected. It provides an integrated international history of the period between 1957 and 1970. Many treatments of world history and international relations since World War II are rather compartmentalized in nature, usually along the lines of separate nation states, and although this approach aids the organization and presentation of information, it tends to hinder an overall appreciation of the international environment within which policy makers had to operate. In order to understand why British leaders considered some options to be more attractive than others at vital moments, we need to know more about the activities of the other "great powers" of the period. Therefore, this book treats British policymaking as one component of an evolving international order. In addition, this book balances, and to some extent corrects, those accounts that exaggerate or otherwise misrepresent the nature of Britain's "decline" as a world power. Overly negative interpretations are challenged. British leaders were not uninformed, or unreflective, or unsuccessful in managing "decline" and sustaining Britain's influence. They did a better job than many historians have recognized. The book is designed primarily for scholars and general readers who are interested in modern British history, international relations, post-1945 world history, the end of the colonial empires, and the history of the developing world.

Interesting, purposive and excellent articles and chapters on the struggles and resolution of the aborigine’s people integration into Queensland and Australia’s majority culture exist. Sadly, hardly veiled political discourses also exist and pass as guides proffered as panaceas. The result is discord and without a solution in-sight, or in mind. The larger problem of indigenous folks who are left without identification of problems, solutions offered, and ultimately dilemmas is not viable. Complacency toward collisions of culture, and ecological-ethological niches left unidentified and unsolved engender violence and discord as acceptable. Indigenous Australians experience disenfranchised losses in their assimilation and accommodations to the larger societal influences in an urbanized modern society. In part, disenfranchised losses in some instances are internal fractures from their own tribal leadership. Also, disenfranchisement of Aborigine Officers from their own cultural identity, colonization and the explosion of the newest technological advances without time to assimilate and accommodate to such quantum moments intra-psychically result in deleterious consequences.
