From May 2010 to January 2011 the Marlborough Gallery displayed a set of sixteen monumental sculptures by Manolo Valdés on the section that goes from 166th street in Broadway to Columbus Circle.These sculptures acted as beacons of the singular iconography of the Valencian artist. They were all made in New York, the city where he lived for more than twenty years. This is the first time a Spanish creative artist has taken up such a vast space in the complex urban area of Manhattan. During the nine months that the works were shown, they became referents integrated into the changing landscape where each one of them was carefully exhibited: on sidewalks and boulevards, in parks and subway entrances...Around them, the routine of the neighborhoods followed its course, from the unhurried peace of the Dominican Harlem to the acceleration of the Lincoln Center. The result was an experience which confirms that art can become an inseparable part of the pulse of life.

Born 1958 in the Czech Republic, Jitka Hanzlova moved to Germany in 1982. Between 1987 and 1994 she studied visual communication at University Essen, specialising in photography. She is perhaps best known for her work Femme (1997-2000), a series of portraits of women of varying ages, whom she met on the streets of America and Europe. Hanzolva has been awarded several photography awards, including the BMW-Paris Photo Prize 2007, the Otto Steinert Prize in 1993, and has been nominated for prestigious awards such as the London Citibank Prize for Photography. She has participated in many group exhibitions, and solo exhibitions of her work have appeared in the Museum Folkwang, Essen, Kicken Gallery, Berlin and Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. This book accompanies an exhibition being held in Madrid at Fundacion Mapfre in 2012, and is a unique opportunity to approach in depth her photographic series.

The gardens of the Alhambra Hill, is intended to be a publication that reflects the historical and aesthetic importance of the gardens of this unique monument of humanity. Since the time it was built, from the eleventh to the fifteenth centuries, the gardens have been an inseparable part of it. The authors of the text are two professors from the University of Granada, experts of the monument and its surroundings. They will lead us through a promenade of flowers, plants, trees and gardens with an informative text. Spectacular photographs made by Fernando Manso, a well known Spanish photographer, will take us to this paradise, full of senses, history and beauty that was and still is the Alhambra. With a career that spans nearly eighty years, Manuel Alvarez Bravo has long been recognized as one of the foremost figures in the history of photography and one of the great Mexican artists of the twentieth century. Manuel Álvarez Bravo, a pioneer of art photography in Mexico, is a cornerstone of Mexican culture and twentieth-century Latin-American photography. His work ranges from late 1920 to the 90s. Álvarez Bravo's artistic identity is inextricably linked to the history of his country and the creation of Mexican identity after the revolution of 1910. Thus, his work can be understood both as a reflection of the extraordinary variety of cultures in Mexico as an eccentric drift of surreal avante-garde. The exhibition organized by Fundación MAPFRE and the accompanying catalogue, runs through 150 photographs, a limited number of iconographic motifs of his work: reflections and illusions of the big city, bodies lying converted into shapes, objects of ambiguous meanings, a wide panoramic that shows his rejection to easy picturesque, his irony insistently ambiguous, and his ability to convert images into symbols beyond the poetic realism typical of Mexican culture. Another key element in his photography is the time, and thus, the exhibition explores the relationship between his language and in photography and experimental film stills of the sixties. Finally, the exhibition shows a selection of late color photographs and polaroids confirming Álvarez Bravo as an artist working against the grain of established clichés, while having a defining influence on Mexican and Latin-American photography.

Agatha Ruiz de la Prada began her career in fashion in Madrid in 1981, with the presentation of her first collection in Local, a Design Centre. In the early '80s she opened her studio-store in Madrid, located at No.8, Marqués de Riscal Street. During this decade she held her first fashion shows in Barcelona and exhibited painted outfits and drawings in a number of art galleries in the Spanish capital. A leading figure in Madrid's trendy set, Agatha was involved in a vast number of cultural events during these years, including the rock concert-fashion show entitled Agatha for President, held at Madrid's Railway Museum. In 1986 she participated in her first collective fashion show in France, and also began to design a range of accessories including espadrilles and tights. In 1988 she participated in Madrid's fashion week Pasarela Cibeles for the first time ever and also presented her collection at Milan's Fashion Show. Early in 1990, Agatha presented her series entitled Trajes Inacabados (Unfinished Outfits) in Berlin and Madrid, before going on to Osaka to present an original collection of Agatha-style kimonos which she called Lady from Spain. Agatha's designs reflect a point of view full of love, humor and optimism, with extraordinary colors and forms as a basis for this world she has created. With this combination she obtains unique and organic components in all her artworks: textiles, furniture, crockery, technology, childcare, etc. Agatha Ruiz de la prada believes in a concept of life focused on the smallest details and a world composed of vitality. "The heart ... Who was drawn to whom? I´ve been making hearts all my life, surrounded by hearts night and day, inside and out. I could carry on like that quite happily, making millions of hearts...."

Agriculture is an unavoidable fact of African life: it accounts for 70% of employment on the continent, and 25% of its GDP. Whilst Nickerson's earlier work, Farm, concentrated on how individual identity is made through improvisation, Terrain takes a broader view, focusing on the synergy between cultivation, workers and the environment. The result is a new kind of portraiture that steps away from photojournalism, refusing to merely illustrate statistics and moral indignation. Terrain instead employs a reduced artistic language to draw attention to important debates around crop specialization, subsistence farming and food security. Terrain is about human intervention in the natural landscape, the impact our presence has and the changes it brings about and how, for better and for worse, the world that we make, in turn, changes who we are.
