Where Have All the Vultures Gone

Millions of Ghanaians live with diabetes, hypertension, stroke, cancers and other major chronic diseases. Millions more are at risk of getting these conditions. Individuals living with chronic conditions experience many disruptions, especially at the early stages of diagnosis and adjustment. The disruptions are physical (medical complications), psychological (depression), material (impoverishment), social (stigma) and spiritual (struggles with faith and trust). These experiences have an impact on family life and resources, with primary caregivers bearing similar disruptions to their chronically ill loved ones. While chronic conditions cannot be cured, many individuals hope for a cure. This hope drives healthcare seeking across different sectors of Ghana's vibrant pluralistic health system. When 'hope for a cure' meets 'claims to cure' within the herbalist and faith healing sectors, especially, the outcomes for individuals and their families can be catastrophic. The Ghanaian situation is mirrored in many African countries. It is estimated that African chronic non-communicable disease (NCD) prevalence, morbidity and mortality rates will rise faster than rates in Asia and Latin America over the coming decades. The long term and costly nature of NCDs has major implications for individuals, communities, health systems and governments.In this inaugural lecture, Professor Ama de-Graft Aikins discusses the psychology of chronic disease risk, experience and care in Africa. She makes a case for why the problem of NCDs needs to be examined through a psychological lens. She draws on her independent and collaborative work on diabetes representations and experiences among Ghanaians in Ghana and Europe, and the broader African and global health literature, to highlight the complex multi-level context of chronic disease risk, experience and care. She presents a synthesis of the evidence through the concepts of physical ills and ideological ills, arguing that both are interconnected and, as a result, must be addressed through interdisciplinary approaches. She concludes by offering practical solutions for reducing chronic disease risk and improving the quality of long-term experience and care in Ghana, using examples from countries that have implemented successful NCD interventions.

Sosu's Call, won the 1999 UNESCO 1st prize for Children's and Young People's Literature in the Service of Tolerance. It is listed as one of the top twelve titles of Africa's 100 Best Books; and has been named an Honor Book for Young Children by the African Studies Association's Children's Africana Book Committee, as a contribution to accurate and balanced material on Africa for children. Beautifully illustrated on artpaper, the story tells of Sosu, a young disabled boy who cannot walk. Sosu misses going to school and all the activities of the other children. His village is on a lagoon, and one day when everyone is away fishing, working in the fields or at school, he raises the alarm with his drumming, and saves the village from total destruction by the sea. His heroism is rewarded when a wheelchair is donated and at last he can go to school.

The Magic Goat

The Language Centre was founded in 1970 as a language research department in the University of Ghana, under the then Faculty of Arts. Its mandate was to focus on research and teaching related to the improvement of performance in English, the official language, and the various Ghanaian languages as vectors of education, culture and community interaction. Since the 1970s, the Centre has been focusing on research related to language learning, teaching and assessment, language endangerment and documentation, multilingualism, intercultural communication, and the interconnected areas of language and literature. This book, in essence, reflects these research areas, but more than that the constitutive research articles were produced jointly or severally by different generations of directors and research fellows of the Centre, over the four decades of the organization's existence. The ten chapters of this commemorative anthology comprise selected research articles from a very large pool of previously published works with continuing relevance, as well as more recent works that have not yet been published. The book is not designed for release as a discrete and independent publication. On the contrary, it feeds into a much wider set of commemorative collections from diverse units, all of which are thematically linked in a manner designed to project the mission of the University of Ghana.
