XLIII In Conclusion CAPTAIN BILL MC DONALD OP TEXAS--WHAT HE HAS BEEN So now we have arrived at the end of our story-- the story of " a man who does things "--who has been making history for twenty-five years, who is still making it, to-day. It is the story of a life so full of incident and episode that we have been able to give only a chapter here and there--to touch the high places as it were; for the tale entire would fill a library, and would involve the chronology of a State, which in that quarter of a century has increased its population nearly five times, its wealth in a like proportion, while its progress in education and morals has been incalculable. It is with the improvement last named that Bill McDonald, and the little army of State Rangers from which he had been selected as an example, have been chiefly concerned, though advancement in other directions has been collateral and dependent on moral growth. Order is not only the first law of Heaven, but of the frontier, and by the sturdy Frontier Battalion has the fight for order been made, and won. For in AND WHAT HE IS TO-DAY spite of plague-spots here and there (and in a State of so vast an area, and so recent and motly a settlement, it would be strange indeed if these did not exist), Texas is to-day a splendid empire of beautiful towns and cities--of fair and fruitful farms, and of handsome, hardy law-abiding men and women. Originally published in 1900 as Early Settlers and Indian Fighters of Southwest Texas, this volume has been praised by reviewers for more than a century. J. Frank Dobie said it is "meaty with the character of ready-to-fight but peace-seeking Texas pioneers."

The author was a native of Texas, a Texas Ranger who used a pen as well as he used his gun. His readable volume describes Indian fights and the activities of famous Texas Rangers in detail. Included in these accounts are first-hand recollections of Texas Rangers Bigfoot Wallace and Benjamin F. Highsmith and Mrs. Hannah Berry's description of her encounters with Davy Crockett and Josiah Wilbarger. 
The reprint edition is a replica of the original 1900 volume, complete with a new index added when State House Press published the book as Texas Indian Fighters in 1986.

When the bodies were found, the signs of battle showed with what desperate valor the young rangers had sold their lives. This was about the last of Indian raids on this part of the frontier. After Captain Richarz left the frontier service heserved as justice and attended to his stock and farm. Served one term as representative of the Fifty-second district in the Legislature. His hearing becoming defective, he was incapacitated from further public service, and he spends a quiet life on the west bank of the Seco, in a romantic spot near the foot of the hills, where he attends to his irrigated garden and orchard. He reads the finest print without glasses, and never misses a rabbit or turkey at the distance of eighty yards with a rifle. He has a kind and friendly disposition, and has many friends. His judgment of men and things is astute, and he h^s a blunt way of talking and expressing himself, but his judgment is seldom at fault. He is a devoted Texan, and liberal in his views. GIDEON THOMPSON. Came to Texas in 1852. Among the first settlers who came to Sabinal Canyon, but few have had a more varied or interesting experience than Mr. Gideon Thompson, who still survives at this date (1899) to tell the tale of frontier days. Mr. Thompson was born in Hawkins County, eastern Tennessee, on the 3d day of November, 1822. In 1842 we find him in the State of Arkansas, where the same year he married Miss Margarette O'Bryant. He came to Texas in 1852, and in the fall of the same year wended his way to Sabinal Canyon, the extreme limit at that time of civilization in southwest Texas.
