In the early fourth century, under the reign of the emperor Diocletian, followers of the Christian Faith experienced a sustained and systematic campaign of fierce persecution at the hands of the Roman authorities. The aim of this persecution was nothing less than the entire abolition of the true Faith and the utter destruction of the Church. Much blood was shed and many lives were lost for the holy Name of Christ.\nWhilst these persecutions were conducted throughout the entire Roman empire, they were particularly vitriolic and savage in Egypt. An immense number of Egyptian Christians of the period received the noble crown of martyrdom, responding to the cruelty and inhumanity of their persecutors with a heroism and fidelity which remains profoundly astonishing and wondrously inspiring.\nThis volume presents in English translation (mostly for the first time) ancient Coptic versions of the lives of four Egyptian martyrs who each died under the reign of Diocletian. These are St. Epime of Pancoleus, St. Abanoub of Nehisa. St. Apatil of Sabaru and St. Lacaron of Tgeliensis. Each of these were youths or young men who faced a range of appalling and often bizarre tortures with exemplary courage and fortitude, before accepting final martyrdom at the hands of the imperial authorities.

St Simon the Tanner was an ordinary person who was neither a priest nor monk, and yet is one of the most known saints of the Coptic Orthodox Church. At the time of the reign of Al-Muizz, the first ruler of Egypt under the Fatimid dynasty, Pope Abraam the 62nd Patriarch was challenged to prove the authenticity of Matthew 17:20 regarding the faith to move mountains. He was guided by the Virgin Mary to seek the help of St Simon the Tanner, whom the Virgin Mary said the miracle would be performed through. His humility and life of prayer and service gave him the faith that was strong enough to carry out the amazing miracle of moving the Mokattam Mountain. This miracle is an amazing example of God's power and love as He saves His people from perishing! Sts. Maximus and Dometius are two Roman imperial young brothers who took on the monastic life under the discipleship of Abba Agabus and Abba Macarius the Great. Soon after, they became the namesake and foundation of the Monastery of al-Baram&#363;s in the Wilderness of Scete. To this day, young men who are moved by their example flee to their monastery and bear the name "al-Baram&#363;s&#299;". Hymns, icons, and festivities have developed in their name to preserve their memory and invoke their intercessions. The English translation and Coptic transcription of their Life provided in this book comes from a 13th-century Bohairic manuscript housed in the Vatican Library. Extracts from the Sahidic and Arabic version are also provided to compliment the Bohairic. The hymns that were composed in their honour and found in a number of liturgical texts has been revised for an accurate reading. Finally, brief observations on their ancient wall paintings are considered. These are intended to give the reader a wholistic impression of the two holy fathers.
