Forests and chases were bounded areas where a legal regime separate from the Common Law protected royal and aristocratic hunting proveleges and commoners' rights. Their survival and their history after the Middle Ages is little recorded, yet forest law and customs continued into Victoria's reign, and some still do. In this volume, historians, geographers, ecologists, archaeologists and environmental managers investigate the survival of forests and how they may best be managed in today's world.

This catalogue publishes a revision to modern standards of the entries for the Greek manuscripts catalogued by Henry Coxe in 1852 as part of his catalogue of the St. John's manuscript collection, providing detailed codicological descriptions with photographs of the handwriting of the scribes and specimens of the watermarks in the paper. A scholarly introduction provides new information on the provenance of the manuscripts, identifying the scribes and humanists involved and setting their activities in the context of the Renaissance book trade and the establishment of early humanistic libraries especially in Italy, Spain and France as knowledge of Greek spread westwards after the fall of Constantinople. The development of the Greek holdings in the early history of the college is discussed, showing the importance of William Laud's activities as a collector and donor. An appendix lists the Greek books in the library c.1635. The introduction is full of information for the non-specialist. As well as serving as a short primer on Greek palaeography, it contains sections on the analysis of handwriting and watermarks, definitions of codiological terms and a brief explanation of seventeenth-century binding techniques.

Forests and Chases of England and Wales c.1500-c.1850

This book brings together two of the most important and fascinating art forms in Arabic culture: poetry and calligraphic painting. Walid Khazendar, one of the leading poets in the Arab world, has selected and translated into English twenty-five texts and twenty-three quotations from ancient Arabic poetry. To date, Khazendar has published three collections. His poetry has been translated in Agenda (1997), Modern Poetry in Translation (1998), and some of his poems are included in Tom Paulin's The Road to Inver (2004). Accompanying the translations, the book contains forty-eight calligraphic paintings in colour by the Arab artist Mouneer al-Shaarani, of the texts and quotations. Also contains an introduction to ancient Arabic poetry, the original texts in Arabic and notes in English on the poets.

English Geographies presents a set of seven interlinked inquiries into the ways in which geographical variations in the material conditions of existence and their representation in maps, poetry, and prose need to be incorporated into our understanding of the patterns of English history. The essays range widely, treating subjects as diverse as criminality in Oxfordshire, the birth of the preservation movement in Epping Forest, and Shakespeares representation of forest cultures, but they are unified by two underlying beliefs: in the centrality of geographical variation to the understanding of history, and in the need to ground such inquiry in rigorous empirical work.
