This book provides instruction in applying basic treatment strategies to patient care. Emphasis is placed on teachi. ng diagnostic skills, and especially, the therapeutic management of emotionally disturbed patients. This book is intended as a companion text to Basic Psychopathology: A Programmed Text, whi. ch focuses more on teaching the description and observational skills for diagnosing common psychopathologic syn- dromes. Basic Psychotherapeutics gives pragmatic suggestions for treating a variety of psychopathologic disorders, many of which are newly classi- fied in the Diagnostic Statistical Manual - III (DSM-II1) published by The American Psychiatric Association. We have adopted the terminology and many, but not all, of the diagnosti. c criteria used in DSM-III. The treatment recommendations proposed are eclectic in nature and the infor- mation presented is non-theoretical and patient centered. Basic Psychotherapeutics is divided into three parts. The first re- views basic data collection procedures and treatment skills; it includes chapters on interviewing, the mental status examination and pharmaco- logic, psychologic and behavioral therapy. The next section includes chapters on commonly encountered psychiatric syndromes such as schiz- ophrenic, affective and anxiety disorders. The final chapters are pre- sentations of special clinical interest, such as the management of suicidal patients, psychiatric emergencies, treating the dying patient and his family, and others.

The definition of the risks of adolescent childbearing has received considerable investigative attention during the last decade. We have gradually moved away from simplistically studying young maternal age as the sole determinant of biologie and psychosocial outcome, even though we recognize it is one of several factors which warrant consideration. We now recognize that if adolescents receive adequate and consistent pre­ natal care, they and their infants should do nearly as weIl as adult women and their infants of similar backgrounds. Thus, the major morbidities for adolescent mothers, adolescent fathers, and their infants are psychosocial: lack of educational and voca­ tional futures, failed marriages, and dependence on government aid for support. The adequacy of the parenting of adolescent mothers and fathers and the long-term developmental and physical outcomes of their children are largely unstudied. This book, edited by Dr. Max Sugar, a recognized authority on adolescence, focuses on the important topic of adolescent parenthood. The authors of this timely contribution approach the topic of adolescent parenthood in a unique fashion, utilizing a combination of several approaches: consideration of fictional characters in history , astute and carefully conceptual­ ized clinical observations, reviews of the literature, and their own investigation. lt will be through the use of such a creative approach that we shall define the important quest ions which should be addressed about adolescents as parents and the outcome for their children.

The death of a friend, a colleague, a relative, or a patient can be a devastating experience, particularly when that death is. self deter mined. It is devastating to us as human beings to lose someone we cared about; it is devastating to us as professionals to wonder what we might have done that could have helped; and it is devastating to us as psychiatrists, because it makes us realize that for all we do know, there is still a great deal more that we do not know. When the person exhibiting suicidal behaviors or completing the act of self-murder (as the Germans call it) is a child or adolescent, the tragedy seems even greater. Completed suicide among the younger age groups (especially in the English-speaking and Scandinavian countries) has increased dramatically over the past three decades and is continuing to do so. Suicide is now, in fact, the second cause of death among adoles cents and young adults in the United States, according to the latest statistical reports. It is exceeded as a cause of death in these ages only by accidents (some of which are undoubtedly hidden suicides, probably more so among such younger persons), with suicide death the past few rates even rising above those from homicide during years.

AN OVERVIEW OF THE PSYCHOANALYTIC APPROACH TO THE WAR NEUROSES The survivors of traumatic events have long been known to suffer psychological sequelae. Of all possible stressors, combat is one of the most devastating. Wartime exposes its victim to a myriad of stimuli that are far beyond those of civilized life. The impact that remains can affect generations to come. In recent years there has been a paucity of research on the long­ term effects of battle. Particularly after the recent war there was initially an inclination to minimize the psychological impact of combat. It was only after concerted effort by a few dedicated clini­ cians that formal recognition was granted to the current version of the war neuroses. In the parlance of the day it was called the Post­ traumatic Stress Disorder (Figley, 1978). This phenomenologic diagnosis has been instrumental in bringing the necessary attention to this condition. Its applicability has been tested across a wide range of stressors, from man-made to natural. Few workers in the field now doubt the power of traumatic events to leave a profound impression on the victim.
