Duchamp As Curator is the product of the Duchamp symposium at the Daimler Art Collection, Berlin, in April 2017. Presented are eight chapters from the attending authors and Duchamp scholars providing a comprehensive look into Duchamps unorthodox use of curatorial practices to redefine his own art along with others of the time. Critical and extensive examples of his publications, photographic documentations, layout of art magazines, and his ground breaking exhibitions with the American Modernism, Dada, and Surrealism movements support his process in this amazing publication. While deliberately distancing himself from the artistic norms of the time, Duchamp shattered the concept of curatorial practice of the time. According to the pointed thesis of the symposium and the publication, Duchamp was one of the first artist curators, thus decisively influencing the reception of his work along with the development of contemporary exhibition practice. Duchamp as Curator

In her work, German minimalist artist Katharina Hinsberg (b. 1967) focuses on a complex analysis of the genre of drawing and its historical, technical, and spatial contexts. With her new artist book Sequence: Drawings 1117, Hinsberg presents for the first time a new series of 117 colored pencil drawings of horizontal lines on a grid. With each drawing, a new color is added, growing and then shrinking or disappearing, whereby a dense, colored hatching is created by the movement of her hand. Without spacing, lines and rows turn into color fields that continue and change from page to page. The underlying grid consists of 23 fields across and 30 lines high, each field measuring 5 x 5 mm. The elegant, complex works in Sequence: is the newest edition to the Kienbaum Artists Book series.

This monumental exhibition catalog presents an inspiring overview of the work of Stephan Balkenhol, one of the trail-blazing German sculptors of the last two decades. The center of Balkenhol s work is the human form; he gouges his figures out of tree trunks and paints them, leaving behind traces of the tools, branch notches and splits in the wood. The resulting figures seem both disturbingly personal and anonymous, ordinary people posed in front of painted backdrops, embracing others in awkward pas de deux, with echoes of Teutonic cuckoo-clock kitsch. I don't want talkative, expressive figures, which is why I seek an open expression from out of which all states are possible, says Balkenhol . The book includes the artist's less-known animal figures, and drawings and photographs. Essays by Matthias Winzen and Harriet Zilch.
