<p>»Except for painting and gardening, I m useless«, Claude Monet wrote to a friend, preferring a life in Giverny, 3 km away from Vernon on the Seine downstream from Paris. He went there in 1883, initially remodelled the home and garden complex and made an ornamental garden out of Clos Normand. Later, in 1893, he bought a large area across the street, now the Chemin du Roy, where he could create his famous water lily pond and the Japanese bridge, which would be the key motif in his work from 1897 until his death on 5 December 1926. The street is partly the reason why there was no other view of the bridge for Monet, and it is said that he had his gardeners wiped the dust of the lilies every day, until he finally had the road asphalted at his own expense. Darren Almond, born in 1971, now lives in London and works mostly on elaborate photographs taken under a full moon. He has progressed through his participation in 1997 at the legendary exhibition »Sensation« via the Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2003 and not least by his nomination in 2005 for the Turner Price to become one of the outstanding British contemporary artists. After his exhibition at the Villa Merkel and the resulting cassette »Nocturne«, this publication, which contains new photographs of Monet s garden, emphasises the sculptural floral motifs in Darren Almond s photographic work. Also, the individual flower photographs can be separated from the book block, which is protected by a translucent plastic cover, in which a small signed picture of a polaroid with the famous lily pond has been inserted.</p>

Herbert Brandl, considered one of the noted figures of the Germannew painting movement of the 1980s, continues to make work of ahighly personal and affective nature. Immediately following the openingof his exhibition of monotypes at Vienna s Albertina in 2010, the artistunderwent emergency surgery due to an acute aneurysm. In the monthsand years since, Brandl has used his painting to meditate on the violenceand physical pain of that experience. In this new publications, featuringBrandl s latest series Katana, reproductions of his lush abstract colorscapesare juxtaposed with images of Japanese samurai swords. The folds ofthe steel katana blade begin to resemble a mountain panorama, whiletraces of the scalpel and the violence done to the artist s own bodybecome emotionally present in the paintings themselves.

There is certainly something of-a-kind about Mary Heilmann s alternatelydiaphonous and goopy supersaturated canvases and the rainbow-huedfabric paintings of Blinky Palermo. A year into his appointment at the Bauhaus, Paul Klee was teaching pictorial configuration as part of the basiccourse. In addition to staging numerous major exhibitions, the Italian artist Tatiana Trouvé, now living in Paris, has also participated in the São Paulo Biennial in 2010 and the Biennale of Venezia in 2007. The large-scale presentation of her invariably site-specific works in eight installation rooms at the Kunstmuseum Bonn is the first solo exhibition in a German institution the shows in Bolzano and Nuremberg for their parts will be entirely different. The catalogue of these three spectacular events will now give the first comprehensive overview of both the installations and the large-format drawings. What is striking about the work of an artist who spent much of her childhood in Africa, is the minimalist style in which simple materials, such as pieces of metal, stones, chairs, glass, soil, or water are deployed and always evoke memories in their surprising combinations with one another. Tatiana Trouvé s rooms never present something that is absent symbolically, but draw the visitor, both concretely and corporeally, into a both fantastical as well as imaginatively charged spatial situation that seems to be suspended between lightness and monumentality, stability and volatility, fiction and the everyday. She herself tells a short, very meaningful story on the subject: »During my childhood in Dakar, some griots knocked on our door and told us the history of our ancestors, they told us about their role in the village, their professions. In truth, it had nothing to do with the actual history of our white-skinned, Italian-born family of four. The griots told the story of people from a village which had once existed on the site where our house currently stood, as if the past led to a coexistence or a parallel life abreast current reality, without giving rise to the slightest contradiction between the two. This »oral history« celebrated the chance occurrence that two temporalities could coexist in the same space-time. This insight opened the door for me to a hitherto unknown dimension. Since then, this idea has not left my consciousness. For this reason, I love stories that influence particular spaces, that intervene in them as it were.

The work of Swiss painter Hans Emmenegger (1866-1940) has finally beenmade available to a larger audience in this extensive monograph accompanyingthe exhibition in 2014 at Kunstmuseum Lucerne. Often considered along withhis contemporaries, Swiss realist and symbolist painters Holder and Bocklin,Emmenegger created an extensive oeuvre of landscapes, still lives, nudes, animaland architectural paintings. His oils of hills, bald trees, barren snowmelts, shadyforest glades and sunspots capture the magnificently desolate and forlorn landscapes of Central Switzerland and are considered a precursor to the realisticpaintings of Franz Gertsch and Gerhard Richter.
