Friedrich Weinwurm, a contemporary of Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe or Walter Gropius and one of the most noteworthy architects of Slovakia, can be ranked among the leading representatives of the interwar Central European architectural avant-garde. His legacy of several dozen designed and completed office buildings, single-family houses, villas and housing complexes (Nová Doba, Unitas) forms an oeuvre attracting admiration today. His progressive social program and clear principles for architectural design influenced the Slovak architectural scene of the 1920s and 1930s more than the work of any other architect. The publication contains a comparison between Weinwurm´s work and its contemporary efforts on both the local and international levels, as well as its integration into the context of the domestic and broader European architectural situation. Further presenting the architect´s work is a rich array of historic visual materials, photographs, plans, archival documents, and the current photographs by Olja Triaška Stefanovic.

<p>Karol Plicka was a Slovak ethnographer, collector of folk songs, photographer, director, scenographer and cameraman. This monography maps in detail the life and work of this incredible, but at the same time, almost forgotten personality. The book contains rich material showing how Slovakia was depicted in Plicka´s photographs and films. The publication is full of Plicka´s personal photographs, photographs of the artist whilst working, the correspondence, manuscripts, musical notations, memoirs of his relatives and photographs from the Plicka´s family album. Karol Plicka died in 1987 in Prague, Czech Republic, and left us with a rich body of work – 40,000 musical notations of folk songs, thousands of negatives from Slovakia, Romania, Yugoslavia, Austria and the United States, four full-length films and a few short films, tens of picture publications.</p>

The history of Slovak photography is full of unnoticed, semi-forgotten or completely forgotten figures. However, until recently, only a few were as unknown as Ján Galanda. Like most modern Slovak photographers, Ján Galanda was an amateur; in his civil life he worked as a bank clerk. He didn’t begin to systematically work with photography until the first half of the 1930s, and like the majority of amateur photographers, he mainly documented his leisure time interests and activities, such as travel, hiking and sports. As opposed to most of the shots of this type, Galanda’s photos are created with precision and feature a demanding and at times refined composition. His shots, a kind of Slovak glamour style, were unique in Slovakia. Although Jan Galanda depicted much from the lifestyle of modern times, his photographs remained timeless, splendid, unbiased and “captivated by beauty”.

<p><div><i>Moderate Progress</i>, the third part of the series Graphic Design in Slovakia after 1918, focuses on professionalization of graphic design in Slovakia in the early 20th century until the birth of the Slovak State in 1939. Taking place during the Slovak modernist period, this professionalization was spread mostly by teachers from the School of Arts and Crafts in Bratislava, but also through people around the Slovak typographer journal and people working for the Central-European advertisement agency Redopa (Vladimír Bahna, Juraj Stanko, Ludovít Kudlák). The talented Ladislav Csáder,&nbsp;the central figure of the book, was working in Redopa&nbsp;and also was a graduate from the School of Arts and Crafts. He lived most of his life in Bratislava&nbsp;and is not very well known to the public--but he remains one of the most influential graphic designers, typographers, and photographers in European history. This&nbsp;bilingual English-Slovak publication is full of rich pictorial material--mainly artworks that have never been published before. The book is published in collaboration with the Slovak Centre of Design and Slovak Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava.</div></p>
