Alongside Edvard Munch, Gustav Vigeland (1869-1943) is Norway’s most famous artist. He made his debut in 1889, and during the 1890’s he established himself as one of Norway’s most promising sculptors. His breakthrough came in 1908 with the celestial monument to the Norwegian mathematician Niels Henrik Abel, and during the first decade of the 20th century he made several critically acclaimed portraits and monuments. From 1907 he became gradually more preoccupied with his great Fountain, and what was to become the Vigeland Park in Oslo, today one of Norway’s most visited tourist attractions. In this catalogue, Gustav Vigeland will be presented with the following artists: Antoine-Louis Barye (1795-1875), Constantin Meunier (1831-1905), Auguste Rodin (1840-1917), Aristide Maillol (1861-1944) and Antoine Bourdelle (1861-1929). The aim of the book is to place Vigeland’s artistic development in a broader art historical context. Parallels will focus on Vigeland’s own interest in the selected artists, the formal and thematic similarities and differences between their works, as well as Vigeland’s development towards a more simplified form, contextualized by a juxtaposition with Maillol and Bourdelle.

Words about masterpieces, on masterpieces: the irreverent pop art of an emerging Cuban painter 
Since he first burst onto the scene in 2017, the prolific, self-taught Cuban painter CB Hoyo (born 1995) has enjoyed an enormous popularity both online and in the art industry: he has more than 500,000 Instagram followers and has held multiple solo shows throughout the world. Hoyo’s work comprises “fakes” of works by canonical artists such as Warhol, Banksy, Matisse and Rothko, which he paints over with his own irreverent commentary. In one painting, titled It’s a Fake Magritte, Hoyo depicts Magritte’s famous The Treachery of Images complete with its well-known pronouncement, “Ceci n’est pas une pipe.” Above this, Hoyo has painted in red, “This is not a Magritte.” Hoyo’s art, relying on blunt humor and Dada-esque irreverence, embraces the new chaotic normality in which we live. This hardcover volume, the artist’s first monograph, contains 170 reproductions.

CB Hoyo: I Didn’t Know How to Name This

Images and allegories of ecological damage from “the godmother of Miami’s art scene” At the age of 87, Brooklyn-born, Miami-based artist Mira Lehr (born 1936) continues to work every day in her studio, creating ecologically informed images inspired by and depicting nature, on canvas and rice paper. Lehr uses not only paint but also explosives and fire; the resulting destruction is integral to the meanings of these works, which seek to increase awareness about climate disaster. This concern has been a part of her thinking as far back as her young adulthood, studying under Hans Hoffman with Robert Motherwell. In 1969, she was chosen by Buckminster Fuller to participate in his World Game. Since the 1960s, she has been an important voice in the Miami art scene, co-founding the first artist co-op for women there. This updated monograph collects work contained in the previous 2014 edition (published by Hudson Hills), as well as new work created between 2015 and 2021.
