Dana Schutz (born 1976) declared her painterly intentions from early in her work, and the fecundity of her visual world has not diminished over the decade-long course of her career, which has seen her work acquired by major museums across the world. Her paintings have always been characterized by bright, almost throwaway cartoonish colors that seem cheery in all but content. Once described as possessing a “careless cruelty,” Schutz's art plunges into dark fantasy realms to dredge up such images as face-eating heads, self-mutilators, child suicides, persons maimed, blindfolded or bound in terrible ways--all parading before the viewer in a genial palette that would be ideally suited to the depicting of a happy spring day. Schutz qualifies that, while her subjects are frequently self-devouring, they are “self-created too [...] They are defined by their own production.” This paperback monograph surveys work from her debut in 2002 to 2010.

From the end of the nineteenth century until his death in 1917, the French sculptor Auguste Rodin was arguably the most famous artist in the western world. Celebrated in endless exhibitions throughout Europe, he enjoyed the patronage of governments, as well as aristocrats, businessmen, politicians and celebrities from Buenos Aires to Prague. His personal notoriety made him a focus of adulation and emulation, and for decades he exerted a profound influence on American art, particularly through the efforts of patrons such as Sarah Hallowell and Isabella Stewart Gardner. Published on the occasion of a major exhibition at Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University, this massive assessment of Rodin's impact in America includes sculptures and watercolors by Rodin that illuminate the qualities in his art most admired by young American artists. But the volume's primary focus is upon works by American sculptors such as Malvina Hoffman and Lorado Taft, as well as by American artists working in two dimensions, such as the photographer Edward Steichen and the painter Georgia O'Keeffe, who most clearly exemplify Rodin's influence and its eventual decline as other modernist fashions eclipsed him. At nearly 500 pages, Rodin in America thoroughly excavates a hidden strain in American art and provides a long overdue reminder of Rodin's prodigious gifts as a sculptor.

In the closing decade of the nineteenth century, the modern age invaded the city streets of Italy in the form of advertising posters. Bouquets of monkeys, elephants, masks, automobiles and elegantly--and sometimes scantily--clad ladies suddenly blossomed upon walls everywhere, indoors and out, visually grabbing the attention of an Italian public interested in the new commercial products that promised a new way of living. These advertisements were executed by some of the greatest illustrators of the day--Leonetto Cappiello, Achille Lucien Mauzan, Marcello Dudovich, Plinio Codognato, Leopoldo Metlicovitz and Gino Boccasile--who together produced a medley of playful, allusive, ironic and experimental imagery unmatched by any other European or American posters of that era. The current scarcity of Italian posters on the market today makes this lush publication all the more valuable for its depiction of a legacy in poster design.

Even in his lifetime, Robert Capa was described as the greatest war photographer in the world. It was an ironic achievement for a man who loathed war, but to this day, no one better embodies the photographer as cultural soldier and no one’s work better encapsulates the violence and brutality of the twentieth century than Capa. This volume presents a rich selection of his work as a war photographer, starting from the images that established his fame: his documentation of the horrors of the Spanish Civil War from 1936–1939 and the Chinese resistance to the Japanese invasion in 1938. It continues on to World War II--including Capa’s stunning photographs of the D-Day landing in Normandy, where on June 6, 1944, he swam to shore alongside the second assault wave of American troops--and on to the first Arab–Israel conflict in 1948, before concluding with the First Indochina War, in which Capa joined a French regiment and eventually lost his life.
