Welcome to the Evidence-Informed Health Policy Instructor's Guide. This guide is designed to be a resource for educators in the academic, professional association, government affairs, regulatory, or practice environments. The guide is divided into three units: <ul> <li>Unit 1: Using the Textbook for Teaching and Learning</li> <li>Unit 2: Resources for Teaching Evidence-Informed Health Policy</li> <li>Unit 3: Chapter Learning Activities and Instructor Support</li> </ul> In this instructor's guide, we provide suggestions for faculty, nurse leaders, nurse members or staff of professional associations and organizations, regulatory agency members or staff, or other healthcare professionals who are teaching others to become more familiar with the policymaking milieu and processes using the book Evidence-Informed Health Policy: Using EBP to Transform Policy in Nursing and Healthcare. For faculty in particular, the menu of chapter-by-chapter learning activities and case studies will help facilitate student learning about the public policy process and can be used as part of a health policy course at a variety of academic levels. The student workbook contains the same learning activities and case studies found in the instructor's guide. However, the instructor's guide additionally contains instructor support; this consists of sections on learning activity implementation and student evaluation. Also, some learning activities require fill-in responses or answers; samples are provided for the instructor. Finally, the instructor's guide includes one learning activity found in the student workbook: suggestions for a penultimate learning activity/comprehensive policy brief. We have often used this in our courses instead of a final examination. For master's-level students, we suggest assigning a bill or other form of established policy. Doctoral-level students are guided through the process of identifying an individualized policy problem and, eventually, a viable solution; some have gone on to develop these as DNP projects.

The crux of the PEACE model is the mnemonic that simplifies the evidence-based practice (EBP) process for clinical nurses. NYP is composed of 10 hospitals in New York and employs more than 11,000 nurses across the enterprise. The mnemonic PEACE promotes understanding and application by clinical nurses, providing a way to easily remember the EBP component stages. The uniqueness of the PEACE model is its simplicity. ABOUT THE STUDENT WORKBOOK As a student in a healthcare profession, you have probably heard of the concept of high reliability as a means to reduce harm, enhance quality, and improve outcomes. Patient safety and quality are of increasing importance to consumers, payers, providers, and organizations. As a large majority of the workforce, nurses are on the front lines of the delivery and provision of safe and effective care. The quest for high reliability must permeate an organization by way of leadership commitment, a culture of safety, continuous quality improvement, and every person's focus within the organization. This student workbook is designed as a companion to the primary textbook, High Reliability Organizations: A Healthcare Handbook for Patient Safety & Quality (2nd ed.), which explains how high reliability contributes to organizational quality and safety, recommends quality and safety activities based on high reliability principles, and integrates high reliability principles into healthcare practice. PURPOSE AND STRUCTURE The purpose of this workbook is to provide learning activities that relate to each chapter in the book. These learning activities introduce students to high reliability, explain the concepts of high reliability and high reliability organizations (HROs), provide examples of what the concepts would look like in everyday practice, and describe the information and tools nurses and other healthcare providers need for the organization to become an HRO. The first 26 chapters provide one accompanying learning activity, whereas the last five chapters provide context for the summative or final learning activity. Every learning activity reflects the content of its accompanying chapter. Students should read the chapter and supplemental materials and, if specified, focus on certain sections within the chapter prior to completing an exercise. Students may complete all these learning activities, but some instructors may choose only one or two from each chapter that meet the objectives of a particular course.
