Krause offers a reading of the second century CE pseudepigraphical letter 1 Timothy in the light of feminist critical studies and discourse analysis. Read as discourse, the claims of the letter come to life on the page and reveal contexts of great struggle within the ancient church. Demands for order, silence, and discipline are read for what they attempt to represent and for what they unwittingly reveal. From this perspective, the letter reveals the struggles of the early church regarding gender, class, church order and the meaning of tradition, and as such provides a lively ground for examining similar struggles facing the church today.

Fontaine explores the social roles of women as depicted within the book of Proverbs, as well as the character archetypes and patriarchal ideologies which undergird the sages' portrayal. Using feminist folklore methodologies and performance studies, the author explores an alternative paradigm for understanding women's relationship to wisdom traditions in the ancient Near East, using parallel texts, later midrash and extrabiblical re-presentations of biblical women associated with wisdom.Fontaine is thus able to show that women were culturally authorized 'performers' of the family-based wisdom traditions of teaching, economic problem-solving, and care-giving, and that these roles provided them with a platform to use their acknowledged wisdom in public roles.

Paul's first letter to the Thessalonian boasts a preponderance of fictive kinship terms (e.g. father, children, nursing mother, brother etc.) In this book, Burke shows that Paul is drawing on the normal social expectations of family members in antiquity to regulate the affairs of the community. Family metaphors would have resonated immediately with Paul's readers and the author surveys a broad range of ancient texts to identify stock meanings of the father-child and brother-brother relations. These stereotypical attitudes are explored to understand Paul's paternal relations (2:10-12) with his Thessalonian children and in resolving sexual immorality (4:3-8) and the refusal by some brothers to work (4:9-12; 5:12-15). This study has implications for the structure of early Christian communities.

The Chronicler As Theologian: Essays in Honor of Ralph W. Klein (Journal for the Study of the Old Testament Supplement)

The book explores the problems faced by the church in Antioch in the mid-first century CE once the decision was taken to welcome Gentiles into the church. Slee argues that a particular problem was the celebration of the Eucharist, since some Jewish Christians felt that the table-fellowship this involved inevitably brought the risk of contamination (because of Gentile contact with idolatry). She suggests this was the subject debated at the Jerusalem conference described in Acts 15 and Galatians 2, and it was the eventual decision of the Antioch church to hold separate Eucharists that led to Paul's break with the church (Gal 2:11-14). Thus even at the end of the first century CE the Antioch church was still divided on the issue.
