In a career spanning approximately twenty years, Welsh artist Bethan Huws has adopted a wide range of differing aesthetic and conceptual approaches which often reference names of artists and titles of works associated within the stream of readymade and Conceptual art. Illustrated throughout with works clearly reproduced and printed on thick glossy paper, this catalogue produced for the exhibition Fountain presents an extensive overview of significant works from the different periods of her career. Featured alongside sketches, watercolours, installations and sculptural pieces are other additional works specific to the artist such as word vitrines, wall texts and floor pieces. Published on the occasion of the first museum survey of mirror works and drawings by Iranian artist Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian, held at the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, this catalogue offers a critical and art historical view on a singular body of work produced over a career of more than 40 years. According to curator Suzanne Cotter, Her history, like so many artists from Iran and the broader Middle East, is one of starts and ruptures. Although the artist spent much of her life in North America, her formal language was shaped and nourished by the traditions of Iran, allowing her oeuvre to form connections outside the dialectic of East and West.

With the exhibition On the Verge of Visibility at the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, German artist and photographer Wolfgang Tillmans focuses on border zones and liminal states, trademarks of his recent work. Tillmans has become increasingly interested in the chemical foundations of photographic material, as well as its haptic and spatial possibilities, creating works without a camera in the darkroom that present photography as a self-referential medium. In this way, Tillmans engenders an experimental ground for the creation of a new type of image structure. In this catalogue, these abstract works appear in juxtaposition to figurative photographs.

Pictures brings together an extensive selection of works from throughout Robert Mapplethorpes career. Responsible for some of the most arresting, polemical, and iconic images in contemporary photography, Mapplethorpe turned the photograph into a controlled performance between artist and subject in his quest to engage with sexuality, gender, race, and queer and non-heteronormative bodies. He treated his subjects with equal attention and precision, from cut flowers and male sex organs, to the cast of friends, lovers, and celebrities he depicted. This catalogue is published on the occasion of the eponymous exhibition at the Serralves Foundation.
