William Kelly (1821-1906) was an outstanding classical scholar in his generation, preacher, teacher, editor of several influential religious magazines and of John Nelson Darby's "Collected Writings," and a prolific author in his own right. He was a major figure in the late nineteenth century return to basic biblical teaching usually known as the Brethren movement, often seen as the cradle of dispensationalism. A Canadian contemporary described him as "second only to Mr Darby in knowledge of the Truth, and first in ability to state the Truth clearly." A frequent lecturer, he subsequently revised and published many of his lectures in book form. His familiarity with the original languages of the Bible led to well-researched expositions of both Old and New Testament books, which were widely read and highly regarded by Christians in his own time, and still today. With a genius for exposition, he combines scholarship and spirituality so that his readers gain a real sense of his unrestrained love for the Lord of whom the inspired pages of scripture speak. This book considers six aspects of the Church of God: formed as the body of Christ; accepting the direction of the Holy Spirit; responsible to Jesus as Lord; engaged in worship, remembrance and prayer; using gifts; and receiving practical resources daily in faith. Accepting the absolute authority of the Word of God, he opens up what the Bible has to say on each of these topics. Getting to the heart of the matter, in a logical way, he challenges every Christian to consider the practical implications for their communion and conduct as members of the Church of God.

Algernon James Pollock's classic volume is an exposition of "types" - people, places, objects, events, offices, activities and institutions - connected with the Tabernacle, the Priesthood, the Offerings and the Feasts (particularly as described in the first five books of the Old Testament) which foreshadow their corresponding New Testament "antitypes" - most particularly Christ Himself. The author wrote in a postscript to the first edition: "The reward of this modest volume will be if it whets the appetite of the reader, leading him to desire to know more of these wondrous subjects. The theme is delightful indeed as it leads the heart into contact with Christ, subduing it by a deepening sense of the meaning of the death of Christ, leading out at the same time the affections of the heart to Him to Whom the believer owes everything for time and eternity." Elsewhere he once wrote: "We appeal to our readers, especially young men and women, to give the Bible a fair trial. Read it, study it, and seek earnestly the truth." The Gospel in Job (Understanding the Old Testament)

Yves-Yannick Ford was born in 1969 and spent his childhood in Buckinghamshire, UK. His parents and grandparents taught him the importance and value of the Bible as the Word of God, and it was through reading and re-reading the Epistle to the Romans that Yannick found settled peace and assurance of salvation as a young man. He studied biochemistry and works as a scientist in Kent, UK, where he lives with his wife and four children. He is keen for others to read the Bible and experience its life-changing power too, since it is "living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword" (Hebrews 4:12), and God uses His Word to cause us to be born again (James 1:18; 1 Peter 1:23). This is one of the purposes of the commentary on Job - to show how, all through the Bible, there is one message of salvation, and how we can enter into a relationship of peace and joy with God through the work of the Lord Jesus Christ. A second objective is to show how the lessons that Job learned can teach us not to rely on ourselves, but to trust in the Lord Jesus who has not only forgiven our sins, but has also dealt with our sinful nature and gives us the power to live a life that is pleasing to Him. The author takes up the points made by Job and his friends in their long series of speeches, and shows how these can be understood in the light of the Bible as a whole.

Hamilton Smith (1862-1943), born in Barnes, Surrey, the son of a sea captain, was employed in the office of his uncle's building firm, where he was later joined by his cousin F B Hole. By 1901, married and living in Sutton, Surrey, with his wife and young family, he had retired from the building trade and entered full-time upon the task of building up the church of God. Later in life, he moved to Weston-super-Mare in Somerset, his wife Rachel's home county. His personal ministry was delivered in the United Kingdom, but his written ministry continues to be read worldwide. Along with H P Barker, A J Pollock, J T Mawson and F B Hole he frequently contributed articles to "Scripture Truth" magazine, which often provided the basis for books later published by the Central Bible Truth Depot. Hamilton Smith's written expositions of the Scriptures are brief, clear and very much to the point. This volume is one of a series of Old Testament character studies for which he is probably best known. It examines the history of Elisha, the man of God. Like a heavenly stranger he passes on his way morally apart from all, while in grace the servant of all, accessible alike to rich and poor. He is found in every condition of life; he comes into contact with every class; he moves at times within the land of Israel, and at times he passes beyond its bounds. But, wherever he is, in whatever circumstances he is found, with whoever he comes into contact, his sole business is to make known the grace of God. Sometimes he is mocked; sometimes ignored and forgotten; at times men plot to take his life; but in spite of all opposition he pursues his service of love. He allows nothing in his ways and manner of life that is inconsistent with his ministry of grace. He refuses riches and gifts, content to be poor that others may be enriched. Thus in many ways he foreshadows Christ, who lived among us full of grace and truth; who became poor that we might be rich; who endured the contradiction of sinners, and who, at last, gave up His life that grace might reign through righteousness. But Elisha is also the pattern for every believer in Christ, teaching us at all times to be the exponents, in a needy world, of the grace of God that has reached us in our degradation in order to have us with and like the Man Christ Jesus in heaven.

Hamilton Smith (1862-1943), born in Barnes, Surrey, started work in the office of his uncle's building firm. His personal ministry was delivered in the United Kingdom, but his written ministry is still read worldwide. His writings are brief, clear and very much to the point. Like much of his writing, the contents of this volume first appeared as a series of articles in "Scripture Truth" magazine. "Without Scriptural thoughts as to the truth of the great mystery concerning Christ and the Church we shall not be able intelligently to enjoy Christian fellowship, take up the service of the Lord, or even fulfil the ordinary duties of life". With this in mind, the author provides a systematic exposition of Biblical teaching on the Church: its prediction and establishment; God's ultimate and present plans for it; regulations for its administration; and lessons from its consideration as the house of God and the body of Christ. The book ends with practical instructions for the 21st century Christian.

Psalm 119 is the longest of all the 150 Psalms and, perhaps for that reason, its 176 verses are seldom or never read completely either in public or in private meditation or study. This is an immense loss. It has a great subject: the Word of God. It shows how that Word is a treasure trove of spiritual resources for the highs and lows of the Christian's journey through life. At the moment of conversion every Christian is enrolled as a student in God's school, and finding this treasure requires daily Bible study. Meditating on each day's reading helps promote growth in spiritual maturity, experience of spiritual renewal, and the Holy Spirit can maintain praise to God in a continuous spiritual revival. Why the Psalm should be written as an acrostic is a matter of some interest. Was it simply to aid memorisation of the original Hebrew text? Do the individual letters of the Hebrew alphabet suggest themes concerning God's Word which are taken up in eight-verse sections? Does the current use of the letters of the Hebrew alphabet to represent numbers in dates aid our appreciation of the Psalm? It obviously expresses the hopes and fears of a faithful Jew, but what is in it for those under the new covenant? The author emphasises the practical lessons from this Psalm, in order that every reader might come to share his delight in the daily reading of the Word of God and the blessings this brings.

The theme of this book is the light cast by the activities of Joshua, in possessing the land which God gave to Israel, on the present understanding and enjoyment of all that the Christian believer is brought into as a result of the death of Christ -- now risen and ascended. For the Israelite nation, escape from Egypt was followed by troubled years in the wilderness before reaching Canaan, the Promised Land. But, having arrived, they were only able to take possession of those parts of it on which they could walk; and this meant warfare. Some see the Christian experience mirrored in this: a constant daily struggle, with little encouragement until the wilderness and warfare experience is ended and rest is obtained eternally in Heaven -- the Father's house -- the promised land. The author demonstrates clearly from Scripture that enjoyment of the Christian's eternal inheritance begins now. "To know the love of Christ is the corn and the wine, the milk and honey, the wealth and plenty of the Christian's Canaan. It is the pure delight of a day which will know no evening shade."
