When I started re-enacting it would have been such a benefit to have a book like Mr. Grenan has written in my hands. The numerous questions that flood the mind when getting started in the hobby are all answered right here. I had questions, many questions. What exactly do I need? How do I get my gear? Where do I get it? Who do I get it from? How much does it cost? That was just the start. It took some time to get these questions answered. Even after attending a few events, the questions continued to arise. How do I know when I’m shot? What do I need to bring for food rations at an event? How do I make hardtack? What about drill and loading a musket? The questions seemed endless. It was several years before I got all those questions answered. But thanks to this volume, the new re-enactor recruit will not have to go through all that—the answers are all here. Mr. Grenan explores and addresses all those questions that bedeviled me in those days as a re-enactor "fresh fish"—how to learn where Civil War events are held, determining an appropriate organization to join, the different types of Civil War units, getting equipped, weaponry, the various types of events, the methods of going into battle, and the activities back in camp. He even gives some basic information on drill and the steps for loading and firing a musket. The material is presented in an easily read and understood manner. Re-enacting today has something for everyone, though this book focuses centers for the most part on becoming a soldier. There are civilian, sutler, surgeon, chaplain, signal corps, and a host of other impressions. For some, re-enacting is a chance to get away from the job or home and lose themselves in the past. For others, it is something they can do with family or friends. For the younger generation, re-enacting instills a sense of history and offers a chance to learn history something more than what is taught in the classroom. The belief that "history is boring" quickly fades on a re-enactment battlefield or amidst a living history demonstration. Re-enacting offers excellent opportunities for young people. In fact, re-enacting offers many opportunities. Travel—participants will get to visit many areas of the country to take part in different events as well as touring battlefields and historic sites. Movie making—as the public fascination with the American Civil War continues, many re-enactors have had the chance to work on movies and television. Books—many books include photographs of re-enactors in a book or on the cover. Job opportunities—the performing of living history demonstrations at a historical site or park could lead to future employment at such a place. Annie Roberts Yates was 27 years old when her soldier husband perished with his commander, George Armstrong Custer, at the battle of Little Bighorn. We catch occasional glimpses of Annie in Libbie Custer s memoirs, or in newspaper accounts of the sorrowful aftermath of Custer s Last Stand a young widow dressed in mourning, her dark hair turned gray with grief. She remains as elusive as she is fascinating. Talented musician and vocalist, skilled rider and sharpshooter, accomplished linguist and devoted Shakespearean, self-critical and idealistic, practical and romantic Annie Yates was a most unusual woman. Annie Gibson Roberts was born in Philadelphia on April 27, 1849, the daughter of William Milnor Roberts, one of America s most accomplished civil engineers. Following her mother s death, from 1859 to 1865 Annie and her five brothers lived in the jungles of Brazil, where her father supervised the construction of the first railroad into the interior of that country. By 1870 Annie was staying in St. Louis, where Milnor Roberts was employed as chief engineer, building the great Eads Bridge that spanned the Mississippi. From girlhood Annie had recorded her daily experiences in little pocket diaries. On January 1, 1870, after admonishing herself to Take care of the hours & the days will take care of themselves, 20-year-old Annie exuberantly greeted the new year with, How d ye do 1870 Well you are a lusty old fellow! We will be firm friends if you only treat me half as well as your predecessor. Little did she imagine how fateful that year was destined to be. Though she was never considered a great beauty, Annie's large blue eyes and mass of dark brown, nearly black hair, her poise and her invariably fashionable attire, combined to make her a striking figure. Her wit, her sense of fun and her artistic talents made her a welcome addition to St. Louis society. Among Annie Roberts friends was Major General Wesley Merritt, one of the Union s ablest cavalry commanders in the Civil War, and she dutifully chronicled several marriage proposals from young army officers. In those first months of 1870 there was one for whom Annie came to hold special feelings: Paul Dahlgren, a Second Lieutenant in the 3rd Artillery. She found the 23-year-old son of Rear Admiral John A. Dahlgren as bright as a new shilling, and their friendship soon blossomed into romance, though it was a tempestuous one. It was at this point that Annie Roberts left St. Louis to spend a summer on the plains at Fort Hays, Kansas accepting the hospitality of her uncle, Major George Gibson, the Post Commander. There she would meet for the first time George Armstrong Custer and the officers of the 7th U. S. Cavalry one of whom was destined to become her husband. A Summer on the Plains chronicles Annie s experiences on the western frontier, with perceptive observations of the 7th U. S. Cavalry and the Custer inner-circle. Her participation in a Great Buffalo Hunt is recounted in dramatic and exciting fashion. At Fort Hays Annie fell in love with Captain George Yates Custer s friend from Civil War days and the steadfast commander of Company F, the Band Box Troop. They married despite the objections of her family, and raised three children on the isolated and dangerous frontier. The book has two diary sections, a chapter on George Yates, a chapter on the Buffalo Hunt, as well as six appendices. They include Libbie Custer s memories of the great buffalo hunt, Annie s horse riding list, Annie s perceptions of General Custer and a profile she wrote on him, George Yates letters from the 1874 Black Hills Expedition, and a remembrance of Mrs. Custer by a daughter-in-law of the Seventh Cavalry.

Wert, PA When the 9th Vermont Regiment marched down Broadway in New York City in July 1862, the local press proclaimed it as the first regiment to answer President Lincoln’s recent call for 300,000 volunteers. It was an auspicious beginning. Two months later the Vermonters found themselves part of the Union garrison surrendered at Harpers Ferry. During the remaining three and a half years of their service the regiment constantly worked towards the removal of that blemish on their record. From the routine of guarding Confederate prisoners incarcerated at Camp Douglas, Illinois, to the piney woods of coastal North Carolina and finally to the gates of Richmond, the 9th Vermont earned a reputation of being well-disciplined and steadfast under fire. The men displayed these characteristics at the 1863 Siege of Suffolk, the engagement at Newport Barracks, North Carolina, the gallant charge at Chaffin’s Bluff outside Richmond, and the 1864 fight at Fair Oaks. Members of the unit marched among the first troops that entered the Confederate capital of Richmond. Though the 9th Vermont did not belong to the renowned ‘Vermont Brigade’ or the 2nd Vermont Brigade made famous in blunting Pickett’s Charge at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863, the regiment still has a noteworthy history. Through the use of many primary source documents, the story of the regiment is told. A fine work on an important subject yet to be treated thoroughly in book form. Visitors to the Gettysburg battlefield daily ask how to reach Iverson s pits, either for historical reasons or for paranormal ones. Interest in the pits is strong, and the name Iverson resonates with a sense of bitter tragedy. A comprehensive treatment of the brigade, tracing its journey up through the first two years of the war to Gettysburg, has proven allusive thus far. Amico s book changes that. The book is well-rounded. Whereas some military historians prefer strict analysis to personal accounts, or lean towards biographical material instead of general descriptions, or they stress human interest over concentrated combat action, Amico s book weighs them together. He does so discreetly by shifting from one emphasis to another towards a complete picture. In his blending of the material, the reader learns how interplay at the regiment and brigade level affected decision-making in circumstances of promotion and combat. At the most basic levels, the author has woven in the private dramas and internal politics of army officer life, so that when Iverson s brigade reaches Gettysburg, there is a clear understanding of where to look for structural and organizational flaws. With Amico s approach, one is not surprised the brigade behaved the way that it did on July 1. Yet another strong element is the background information presented for other brigades that participated in the Iverson fight at Gettysburg. There are full biographical descriptions for key members of Colonel Edward O Neal s Alabama brigade are inserted into the storyline. Important players from the two opposing Union brigades, belonging to Brigadier Generals Gabriel Paul and Henry Baxter, are also profiled. Other brigades including Brigadier Generals George Doles, Stephen Ramseur, Junius Daniel, and Lysander Cutler, are analysed. Amico shows the vital advantage that Oak Hill gave Major General Robert Rodes division in assaulting the Union 1st Corps flank and became a key position on first day s battlefield and Rodes seizure of the hill a decisive moment. From introduction to conclusion, Amico has rigorously reconstructed a manifold picture of one pivotal afternoon, upon one critical piece of ground, during a fateful three day battle. In doing so, he has illustrated through one brigade the internal issues facing Civil War soldiers, and explained the circumstances behind a disastrous military outcome that still affects the public consciousness. His attention to detail and quest to tackle the issue of where Iverson went wrong on July 1 has created a solid historical brick for other historians to build around.

Heart Like A River is the Civil War diary and letters of Sergeant Major Jenkins of the 14th North Carolina Infantry from Littleton (Company A the Roanoke Minutemen), who incredibly survived the battles of Williamsburg, Seven Pines, the Seven Days including Malvern Hill, Second Manassas, South Mountain, Sharpsburg, Gettysburg, Chancellorsville, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Petersburg and Appomattox. He was twice wounded and twice captured including at Sharpsburg s Bloody Lane where he was at the epicenter of the fighting and later among the sacrificial 25 men at Appomattox that sought to delay a Federal division in some of the last fighting. He was also held as a POW at Fort Delaware for a time. Several post-war recollections in the form of letters to relatives give additional details about Sharpsburg, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House and Appomattox. The material was compiled by Jenkins great-granddaughter, who includes her own impressions about the war in a series of essays titled A Great-Granddaughter s Perspective.

For centuries animals have gone to war involuntarily, and our Civil War was no exception. A countless number of four -legged and winged creatures served as soldiers and sailors pets, sharing the hardships of military life on land and sea. A few gained national prominence as regimental mascots, the most famous being Old Abe, the bald eagle which campaigned with the 8th Wisconsin Infantry. Pets provided a valuable service in relieving homesickness and other stresses of war. Dogs were the most common but cats found favor within the Union and Confederate navies for their role in combatting the hordes of rats and mice which infested ships. But tales of such other creatures as squirrels, raccoons, bears, and even a camel are found within this book. Some accounts are humorous, but others are tragic. Useful as pets were as morale builders, they weren t the essential resource which horses and mules were for cavalry, artillery, and transportation units as well as for officers mounts. It has been estimated that more than two million horses and mules served during the war. Their tales too sometimes are tragic. Best known of officers mounts are Gen. Robert E. Lee s Traveller and perhaps Stonewall Jackson s Little Sorrel. The skeleton of Old Fly of the 1st Indiana Cavalry is exhibited in an obscure museum in Indiana. The stories of these animal heroes were drawn largely from memoirs, regimental histories, and Civil War letters. They offer insight into a little studied aspect of this very uncivil war s history and should be of interest not only to students of that conflict but to animal lovers as well.

Civil War Animal Heroes: Mascots, Pets and War Horses

After 150 years this is the first book-length work regarding the 11th New York Fire Zouaves. No Federal regiment marched to war with such high expectations for military glory than the one led by the charismatic Colonel Elmer Ellsworth composed of members of New York City s Fire Department known for their physical prowess and reckless. Ellsworth, had moved from Mechanicville, NY, to Illinois at age 17, where he joined the state militia and studied law in the office of Abraham Lincoln. He transformed a Chicago militia company into the United States Zouave Cadets. Outfitted them in Zouave uniforms, and trained them in the complex maneuvers, and captured the National Drill Competition title in 1859. The following summer, Ellsworth and his Zouave Cadets embarked on a tour of some twenty cities and dazzled the crowd of admirers. The dashing Ellsworth became a national celebrity, and his company s success spawned a zouave craze that swept the country on the eve of Civil War. Ellsworth managed to quickly equip his troops an on April 29, 1861 sporting jaunty gray uniforms with red fire shirts and kepis the Fire Zouaves departed for Washington. Arriving at the capital, the firemen s antics and occasional depredations soon made it clear that Ellsworth faced a considerable challenge in training and discipline. In the predawn darkness of May 24, 1861, the Fire Zouaves boarded transports and embarked for Alexandria. In a move that displayed more zeal than wisdom, Ellsworth proceeded to the roof Marshall House hotel and removed a large Confederate flag, but was shot by the innkeeper on his way down the stairs. Zouave Corporal Francis Brownell quickly avenged Ellsworth s death. Those deadly seconds gave both North and South their first martyrs. Colonel Noah Farnham took command and led the regiment into the Union debacle at Bull Run on July 21, 1861, where the Fire Zouaves played a controversial part in the bloody fight for Henry House Hill. One zouave who saw the elephant there was Private Arthur O Niel Alcock. His detailed prolific accounts appeared in The New York Atlas and New York Leader. Alcock s effusive columns reflected no small degree of wit and literary ability. A comrade noted, Alcock always displayed much ability with the pen, as well as all the characteristics of a jolly good fellow. Initially considered for the captaincy of Company A, Alcock chose to go to war as Colonel Ellsworth s military secretary. At Bull Run, he was detailed to the regimental surgeon, Dr. Charles Gray, as acting medical orderly and supervisor of the stretcher bearers (but entered the fight for a time). In that capacity Alcock found himself en route to the great clash of arms that transpired on the plains of Manassas. The journalist/soldier was taken prisoner, eventually transferred from Richmond to Castle Pinckney, Charleston harbor, SC, and following ten months of captivity in Southern prisons recorded his experiences in a series of articles published in the Atlas. In May 1862, Alcock was exchanged. In the months following Bull Run the 11th New York had returned to the front but continued to suffer from disciplinary lapses that at times brought the regiment to a condition bordering on anarchy. By late May the entire unit was back in New York and in disbanded. Alcock resumed his position as Fire Editor of the Atlas. In mid August of 1862, the paper began to serialize a account of his experiences. He reenlisted in the 10th New York Infantry and was mortally wounded at Laurel Hill (Spotsylvania Court House) on May 8, 1864. The publication of Alcock s letters honor a sensitive and literate volunteer and after 150 years is the first book-length narrative of the 11th New York Fire Zouaves.
