The Chinese city of Chongquing is little known in the West. Yet with its 32 million inhabitants, the city is twice as big as the Netherlands Located on the Yangtze river in southwestern China, it is one of China's most rapidly growing cities. Ferit Kuyas stayed in Chongqing on dozens of occasions for long periods and became totally fascinated by the megalomaniacal construction fervor he witnessed there, as well as its beauty. The almost ubiquitous haze -- naturally present in this region but intensified by large-scale pollution -- gave his work almost automatically an added layer of mystery. Kuyas focussed predominantly on the periphery of the city, where the enormity of it cannot be directly seen, but rather felt. The result is a stifling and exceptional book that displays all the superlatives that describe China: huge unstoppable, terrifying, incomprehensible, fascinating, beautiful....

After a lone trip to Chernobyl in 2005, Donald Weber returned to the abandoned site of the nuclear disaster and spent the next six years in Russia and Ukraine photographing the ruins of the unstoppable storm we call history. Traveling and living with ordinary people who had endured much, and survived everything. Weber began to see the modern state as a primitive and bloody sacrifical rite of unnamed power. 
INTERROGATIONS is the result of his personal quest to uncover the hidden meaning of the bloody 20th century. In dialogue with writer Larry Frolick - whose own ancestors had been decimated in the final months of WW II - Weber insistently and provocatively addresses his questions both to the living survivors and to the ghosts of the State's innumerable victims, resurrecting their final hours by taking their point of view, and performing a kind of incantatory meditation over their private encounters with power.
The policeman, working girls, thugs, dissidents and hustlers who inhabit these pages are all orphans of a secret history; the outline of our collective fate takes shape in Weber's epic work, expanding our awareness of what it means to be an actor in today's dark opera.

'My mother and I are the only members left of a big Italian family. She decided that throwing away all family slides was a big favour to me. 'It happened already', she said, 'and everybody is gone anyway...'
I had the chance to recover only a box containing some slides, metallic cans and small pieces of paper describing the destinations of the family's trips and other details. The wonderful individual slides I was able to see were made before I was born.
But there were others that had been carefully tied with elastic bands and papers, or they were inside closed metallic cans. I was more interested in these than in the ones I could see. How much I could or wanted to know of the past? Would the images tell the truth? What is the role of photography in a family's history? And what do I do with that "gift"?
I decided to let the tied up slides, the small metal cans and the pieces of paper speak to me not from the content of the images themselves but from the questions they were posing. I never opened them. And I am still listening....
I photographed with high-tech digital technology to underline the distance in time, technology and concept between one generation and the other (my gandfather Renato Vaschetti and mine). The original format of the images is 40 x 40 cm., glicee prints.'

By the turn of the 20th century, East African hunting safaris became a fashionable pursuit among members of the privileged classes, paricularly in Britain and the United States. The completion of the Uganda Railway in 1901 provided easier access to the interior highlands of British East Africa (now Kenya), where large game, especially elephants, lions, buffalo and rhinoceros, were plentiful. The white hunter served these paying customers as guide, teacher, and protecter.  It was in Kenya in the early 20th century that the tourist trophy hunting industry proper started, with wealthy European and American visitors paying settler farmers to guide them on hunting safaris in the area. Similar tourist hunting industries soon developed elsewhere in Africa.South Africa currently has the largest hunting industry in the world. There are also well-developed hunting industries in Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia, and to a lesser extent in Zambia, Mozambique and Swaziland. The southern African hunting industry has grown in recent years due partly to a major increase in game ranching at the expense of traditional livestock farming, which has been particularly hard hit by both drought and recession.Hunters explores the complex realationship that exists between man and animal, the hunter and the hunted as both struggle to adapt to ther changing environment.

This album represents some six decades of achievements of Russian photo reporters in the international press photography arena. It contains all the winning photographs in the main categories, as well as photographs awarded honorary diplomas and special prizes by the international jury – a total of over 450 unique works. What makes this book such an exclusive photographic publication is that it features not only the works of 115 great photographers, but also some truly original and unique texts – memoirs of events and notable national and international figures of the time. These include Dmitri Shostakovich, Leonid Brezhnev, Mikhail Gorbachev, Boris Yeltsin, Maya Plisetskaya, Igor Moiseyev, Svyatoslav Fyodorov, Nikolai Amosov, and many others. This publication is therefore of immense artistic and historical value, and the first project of its kind to encompass, and give a detailed account of, the participation of all Russian authors, and members of the professional and children’s juries, in the World Press Photo competition. Another unique feature is the large number of works presented in the author’s original version. This monumental project is the result of a collaboration between Russ Press Photo (curator: Vasily Prudikov) and Schilt Publishing. View From Inside is an expansive presentation of contemporary Arab photography, video, and mixed media art from the Middle East and North Africa. The book shows the works of 49 leading Arab artists from 13 different countries. The works reflect the emergence of photographic, video and digital art as important forms of creative visual expression in the Arab world since the 1990s. The artworks address a broad range of issues that the artists themselves have defined as important to the modern Arab experience. Four texts cover the early appearance of photography in the Middle East and North Africa in the mid-nineteenth century through photography's evolution as an integral part of the contemporary Arab art world: The author of the lead essay on contemporary photographic art is the pioneering curator and expert on classical Islamic art and contemporary Arab art, Karin Adrian von Roques. Ms. von Roques has worked in the Middle East for more than twenty years, bringing important contemporary Arab art to museum audiences in Europe, Asia and the United States. Essays on the history of Arab photographic expression have been written by Samer Mohdad, a well-known Lebanese photographer, writer and co-founder of the Fondation Arabe pour l'Image in Beirut. Dr. Claude W. Sui, Senior Curator of the Forum International of Photography at the Reiss-Engelhorn Museum in Mannheim, Germany and curator of exhibitions on nineteenth century photography in Arabia including To the Holy Lands: Mecca and Medina to Jerusalem. Mona Khazindar, Director General of the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris looks at the development on the history of modern Arab photography and its relationship to contemporary art. Wendy Watriss, Senior Curator and Artistic Director for FotoFest International provides the philosophical overview of the book in her introduction.
