 About the Author \nPeter Zumthor works with his Atelier of around thirty people in the alpine setting of Haldenstein, Switzerland, producing architectural originals like Kunsthaus Bregenz, Therme Vals, Museum Kolumba Köln, the Steilneset Memorial in Vardø, and currently the new building for the Los Angeles Museum of Art (LACMA).

A profound study of Paul Klee's painting Ad Parnassum, a key work in the painter's oeuvre. &nbsp; In the 1920s, German-Swiss artist Paul Klee (1879-1940) began his long-lasting engagement with polyphonic art--a multi-voiced way of painting analogous to music. A relentless experimenter, Klee began these studies while teaching at the Bauhaus in Dessau, developed them further during his tenure at the art academy in Düsseldorf, and brought them to a conclusion after his return to Switzerland in 1933. In this book, distinguished art historian Oskar Bätschmann explores Klee's seminal painting Ad Parnassum (1932). Painted shortly after the artist's departure from the Bauhaus, it symbolizes a new era--one of Klee's own self-discovery. Bätschmann documents how the artist strove for a connection of music to painting in his color hues and in the rhythmic movement of colored dots. Richly illustrated, this book uses Ad Parnassum to place Klee's polyphonic understanding of art in an art-historical context and offers insight into the synesthetic thinking that emerged in the art world during his time.

A uniquely comprehensive survey of Japanese narrative art across eight centuries. The use of pictures to communicate a story has a long tradition in Japanese culture that dates back more than a thousand years. Such narrative illustrations draw on Buddhist texts, classic literature, poetry, and theatrical scenes to create rich visual imagery realized in a wide range of media and formats. Quotations from and allusions to heroic epics and romances were disseminated through exquisite paintings, woodblock prints, and in pieces of applied arts such as lacquerware or ceramics, thus becoming anchored in the collective consciousness. As story-telling art found expression in a variety of materialities, it became an integral part of daily life. A fascinating narrative space evolved that combined artistic excellence and aesthetic pleasure. Love, Fight, Feast features some one hundred paintings, woodblock prints, illustrated woodblock-printed books, as well as lacquer and metal objects, porcelain, and textiles from the thirteenth to the twentieth century, alongside scholarly essays on a range of aspects of Japanese narrative art. This book documents the architecture and history of a unique utopian working and living space for artists in Zurich. The studio and residential building at Wuhrstrasse 8/10 in Zurich is a unique place. Commissioned by the Painters & Sculptors Cooperative Zurich, founded in 1948, eminent Swiss architect Ernst Gisel (1922-2021) designed this ensemble of buildings comprising eight apartments and twelve artist studios in 1953. Thus, a utopia of self-organized working and living space became reality. Since then, fifty-four artists have left their mark on the artistic and cultural life of Zurich and Switzerland from their home on Wuhrstrasse 8/10. This book recounts the history of this extraordinary structure, illustrated with archival plans and documents as well as new and historic photographs. It also examines the political and social dimension of the Wuhrstrasse model and its international impact. Further essays explore how the lives and works of the resident artists are interwoven with contemporary events and address the artist studio as both an idealized myth and as a real place of work. In inserts created especially for the book, eleven Zurich-based artists, all not members of the cooperative themselves, respond to the exemplary model that is the "Atelierhaus."

Illuminates and analyzes Franz Bucher's oeuvre as a whole against the backdrop of his recent works. &nbsp; In recent years, Swiss artist Franz Bucher has produced an extensive series of paintings that he simply titles Fields: lavender, dandelion, rapeseed, and poppy fields congruent with the canvas to form a pictorial field. Yet Bucher's objective is not primarily the pictorial. Rather, it is more about the two-dimensional space which is given an inherent structure by the largely monochromatic primary colors he uses, as well as his dynamic brushstroke. It becomes apparent that most of the artist's oeuvre since the early 1970s has been determined by the metrical rhythm in his use of color. Bucher's paintings constitute actual energy fields. Drawing on previously untapped historical photo archives in Switzerland, a visual history of the modernization of psychiatric hospitals.\nMany psychiatric hospitals in Switzerland house a treasure trove of historical photographs that go back to the nineteenth century and until now have never been studied properly. Glass slides and negatives, loose paper prints, and photo albums allow fascinating insights into the modernization of these establishments—and at the same time into the history of photography. Even as a new medium, photography was used by psychiatrists to record diagnoses, as well as to show the public life behind institutional walls. Thanks to increasingly handy cameras, it was also possible to record the hospital residents’ modest celebrations, as well as leisure and creative activities.\nBehind Walls gathers these visual testimonials of life and scientific practice in psychiatric institutions from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, making them accessible to the public for the first time. The accompanying essays critically study the use of photography as a medium in psychiatry from different perspectives.

The first new book on Swiss artist and printmaker Lill Tschudi in decades.\nLill Tschudi (1911–2004), daughter of a merchant family from the rural Swiss canton of Glarus, moved to London in 1929-30 to educate herself at the Grosvenor School of Modern Art. She flourished in the vibrant imperial capital of the inter-war years and soon gained wide recognition for her bold and often colorful modernist linocuts. She continued her artistic formation during several stays in the equally throbbing Paris in 1930 and 1931. In the Anglo-Saxon world, her reputation as an accomplished printmaker close to the Modernist British Printmaking movement has lasted, and her works continue to fetch good prices at auctions in Britain and Australia. New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art holds some 120 of her prints in its permanent collection. Yet in her native Switzerland, she has largely fallen into oblivion.\nThis book, published to coincide with an exhibition of Lill Tschudi’s work at Graphische Sammlung ETH Zurich in winter 2021–22, is the first major monograph on this outstanding artist. It features previously unpublished material from Tschudi’s archive and from private collections, shedding new light on her life and work, as well as a wide-ranging selection of her colorful linocuts that demonstrates her uniquely dynamic, colorful pictorial world.
