Huber had already been a controversial political figure in the farming community of Rottenbach, Austria, but he went from the frying pan into the fire when he informed his neighbors of his LDS baptism in Munich, Germany, in 1900. For the next decate, he weathered relentless persecution from Catholic clerics, neighbors, the local public school, courts, and government officials. Despite attacks from determined opponents, Huber was extraordinarily loyal to his adoptive faith and played a leading role in the foundation and expansion of the LDS Church in Austria. His descendants number more than 430 and live in many lands.

On September 6, 1888, three Church history missionaries Andrew Jenson, Edward Stevenson, and Joseph S. Black left on a factfinding mission to the Churchs historic sites in Missouri, Illinois, New York, Ohio, and Iowa. They spent a majority of their time visiting the sacred spaces of the Restoration. The observations they made became the subjects of a lengthy correspondence to the Deseret News. These letters were later compiled into a pamphlet, allowing the Saints in the West to vicariously experience the early days of the Restoration. Some notable historical themes in their observations include a desire for the establishment and redemption of Zion and the promise that righteous Saints would be restored to their lands to build up Zion.

When the Book of Abraham was first published to the world in 1842, it was published as a translation of some ancient records that have fallen into {Joseph Smith s} hands from the catacombs of Egypt, purporting to be the writings of Abraham while he was in Egypt, called The Book of Abraham, Written by his Own Hand, upon Papyrus. The resultant record was thus connected with the papyri once owned by Joseph Smith, though which papyrus of the four or five in his possession was never specified. Those papyri would likely interest only a few specialists except that they are bound up in a religious controversy. This book consists of interviews conducted with people born between 1880 and 1910 who grew up in southwestern Utah, the Arizona Strip, and the Muddy River region in Nevada. The excerpts are divided into seven topical chapters: family life/childhood/teenage years, school, work, health and sickness, Mormon colonists in Mexico, interactions with Native Americans, and service. In his introductory essay, the author offers 15 overarching observations based upon the interviews. These furnish a valuable collective portrait of life on the fringes of Mormon society early in the twentieth century--a time period that has been largely overlooked in the social history of Mormonism.
