An ankle operation has helped her beyond braces and crutches although her ankles are still weak. Eyeglasses have improved her myopic vision caused by retrolental fibroplasia (scarred retina) which was brought about by the same oxygen that saved her newborn life. She has endured with a sense of humor the misconceptions of adults and the taunts of schoolmates. Now, wanting to improve her vision and hearing that oxygen somehow was responsible for her problem, Dee researches oxygen at the public and local hospitals medical library. She determines that oxygen hurt her eyes and that less of it would improve her eyesight. Because higher altitudes mean less oxygen, Dee engineers a camping-fishing trip to the Adirondak Mountains with her father and plans a dangerous solo hike to the top of Mt. Lookout to test her theory. Disaster strikes with a thunderstorm. She tumbles and skids down the slope, breaks her glasses and crashes into her father who had followed to rescue her when the storm began. He breaks his ankle. Dee must now become the heroine shed often dreamed herself to be! She must, somehow, get down the mountainside for help. Later, realizing that Dee should know the details of her premature birth survival, her parents take her first to the hospital where she was born and then to the larger hospital with the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit that saved her life. There, Dee speaks to Dr. Lazari, the doctor who administered the oxygen to save her tiny life, the doctor who she has blamed for her poor eyesight. We feel her emotions as she speaks with him and sees other premature babies being cared for. Dee makes her way to her own personal mountaintop.

March of Glory is a handsomely written novel for young adults, teachers interested in integrating American Literature and American History, and Civil War buffs. It is about the mind-set of a young southern soldier. It is an American history experience masterfully crafted, richly documented and accurate in every detail. Cadet Charlie Stuart's story is a "must read" alone, or as a parallel piece to Red Badge of Courage. Born into a prosperous North Carolina family with business ties in the North, Charlie decides to become a soldier when North Carolina secedes from the Union. Against his father's wishes, he joins the Virginia Military Institute to become a good fighting soldier for the honor of his state and his country. The war, he believes, was started over states' rights but was now becoming a war over slavery. Through Charlie's relationships with and observations about his Southern family, VMI cadets and upperclassmen, we experience the internal psychological and real toll on the Southern family unit and social group in terms of emotions and economics. The external economics of the plantation system and slavery are clear, too. Hard work, long hours of study, little food and belittling relationships with upperclassmen and close, cherished friendships with other new cadets are all here. Characters have pasts and personalities. The reader is a witness in real time to real people. Even Charlie's brief capture by Union soldiers has unusual depth as he dramatically shares his fear and his discovery that a Union soldier is capable of compassion. Although the South is ill-equipped for war, the pervading feeling is that it will fight to the death to preserve its way of life. Therefore, when the VMI Corps of Cadets supports General John C. Breckenridge's forces in Staunton, Virginia, we see an extraordinary battle scene. March of Glory is an American novel of human feelings, honor, values and soldiering. It is superb!

As J. J. and Kelly learn to fine-tune the lens setting, we look forward to more adventures with a brother and sister who really like each other.

He sees Cynthia for what she is. Kristina arrives with news of Sam. Together they go to see Blackwell, now in the hospital,too weak with trying to retrieve Sam. Sam alone must now affect his own return. Sam again outsmarts Sinjin, performs the necessary magic, and returns. ** In a wonderful scene reaffirming concern for his son's feelings, one evoking their Christmas tree ritual of years past, Sam's father trashes Cynthia's plastic, decorator tree, stomps across the "sacred" lawn, axes a prized ornamental tree, lugs it across the living room and anchors it in an antique oriental vase. The rare Persian rug becomes the tree's skirt. As they both scan the room for something to use for a star, a perfect five pointed one suddenly appears on top of the tree with "a light so clear and pure that it seemed to let them know that everything was going to be fine."
