The Frogmore estate first came into royal ownership in the mid-sixteenth century but it was held by a succession of Crown tenants for the following 250 years. It formed a substantial enclave between the Great Park and Little (now Home) Park of Windsor, directly bordering the old public road between Windsor and Old Windsor. No doubt it was the close proximity of the estate to the Castle that prompted its purchase by the Crown, for although low-lying and marshy (as its name suggests), its perimeter lies less than a mile from the southern facade of the Castle. The Royal Mews at Buckingham Palace is a unique part of Britain's heritage. Built between 1822 and 1825 for George IV, it is still a fully functioning stables, and the home of many of the carriages familiar to us all from grand state occasions - the Glass Coach, the Irish State Coach, the 1902 State Landau, and of course the Gold State Coach itself, recognized worldwide for its role in The Queen's Coronation and Silver Jubilee. The Royal Mews is also responsible for the training of the famous Windsor Greys and Bays, the horses that pull the royal carriages; for the garaging of the royal cars, including the Rolls-Royce used by the Queen; and for the care, cleaning, and upkeep of historic harness and liveries. Clarence House is famous as being the London home of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother for fifty years, from 1953 to 2002, but it has been a royal residence for over 170 years. It was built between 1825 and 1827 by John Nash for William Henry, Duke of Clarence, who lived here as William IV from 1830 to 1837. Subsequently it became the London home of Queen Victoria's mother, the Duchess of Kent, and of two of Queen Victoria's sons -- Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, and his Russian wife Marie (daughter of Tsar Alexander II); then Arthur, Duke of Connaught. From 1949 to 1952 Clarence House was the residence of Her Majesty The Queen, who as the newly married Princess Elizabeth, lived here with The Duke of Edinburgh. In 1953 Clarence House took on its most famous role, as The Queen Mother's home, decorated in her inimitable style and housing much of her famous collection of paintings and works of art, in particular twentieth-century British art, with pictures by John Piper, Graham Sutherland, Walter Sickert and Augustus John. Clarence House was also home to The Queen Mother's personal collections of English porcelain and silver, and of many mementoes and paintings celebrating her love of horses and racing. From 2003, Clarence House becomes the official London residence of The Prince of Wales, and of the Princes William and Henry. For the first time the ground floor is open during the summer months to the general public. Refurbished and redecorated in keeping with its new official role, Clarence House is the last remaining great London house to be maintained in use for the purpose for which it was built.

Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House, built by the famous architect Sir Edwin Lutyens between 1921 and 1924, is one of the most beautiful and extraordinary dolls’ houses in the world. Standing over 2 meters (or 7 feet) high, it is a perfect replica of an Edwardian private residence of the grandest possible design, complete with Saloon, Library, Dining Room, private apartments, servants’ rooms, kitchen, wine cellar, and garage full of vintage miniature limousines—plus working lifts, running water and electric light.
Every room is fully furnished with miniature replicas of the contents of a real Edwardian house—from the kitchen, with its copper pans and kettles, to the Saloon, with its tiny full-length state portraits. The wine bottles in the cellar each contain less than a thimbleful of vintage wine, the linen cupboard has a full complement of miniature sheets and tablecloths, and in the Strong Room minute replicas of the Crown Jewels are on display. The Royal Collection contains one of the largest and most comprehensive groups of miniatures in existence. This catalogue describes portraits dating from the origins of the art in the 1520s up to the end of the seventeenth century, and includes more than 400 examples, all reproduced in color and most shown at actual size. Artists painting miniatures during the Tudor and Stuart period are particularly well represented, and the illustrations include outstanding works by Lucas Horenbout, Hans Holbein the Younger, Nicholas Hilliard, and others. Portraits of virtually every British sovereign from Henry VII to Queen Anne are included, as are Louis XIV and his court.
