<p>Graffiti is generally dismissed as a form of urban vandalism, but in the late 1970s art collectors and museums began to look on graffiti as a genre worthy of serious aesthetic consideration. This survey discusses the graffiti work of artists including Lee Quinones, Jenny Holzer and Kenny Scharf, and includes Henry Chalfant's meticulously photographed reproductions of the work. Richard Flood, Curator for the Walker Art Center and of this exhibition, offers his meditations on the complex aesthetic and sociological issues generated by graffiti.</p>

Chicago-based painter Phyllis Bramson articulates a rich fabric of dreams, desire, fears and pleasures in vibrant visual poetry, constructing a libidinal, aestheticized world where temperaments, colors, and collars all run hot. Bramson is a foremost figure of the Chicago Imagist School, and her artistic sources are diverse and numerous--ranging from Japanese prints to stage design to decorative motifs from the 1930s, 40s and 50s. This catalogue of The Society's 1986 mini-retrospective of Bramson's mid-career work offers a thorough view of the artist's development, which is marked by stylistic and personal breakthroughs that are dramatically revealed in both Bramson's imagery and choice of media. Dennis Adrian's catalogue essay chronicles the transformations in Bramson's oeuvre through this decisive period, and is an instructive introduction to the surreal beauty of her world.

In this show, three of the most influential sculptors of the 1980s and 1990s were presented in the early moments of their career. Gober, Koons and Steinbach exemplify the shift in sculptural practice toward the recontextualization of ordinary industrial and commercial objects. Highlighting the commodity supports, cultural remainders and overwhelming excess of "stuff" that surrounds us, their works address the alienation of the individual in a consumer society. Now fifteen years later, all three have been storming the art world again with important and controversial work. The essay by the ever thoughtful Gary Garrels, curator of prints and drawings at MOMA, offers an early look at the trajectories undertaken by Gober, Koons, and Steinbach in the mid 1980s and is notable for featuring numerous statements by the artists themselves about their concerns and methods.

Shrunk, frayed, patched, torn, wrinkled-Ramberg pushes the problem of the garment well beyond metaphor. Her paintings are among the most personal work to emerge out of Chicago's Imagist group. In her late abstractions, attire falls away completely, revealing a raw spiritual mechanism that is decidedly impure. In their catalogue essays, Dennis Adrian and Carol Becker each trace the course of Ramberg's continuous meditations on the body through her art-Adrian on the paintings formal and symbolic significance, and Becker on their psychological explorations of female embodiment and subjectivity.</p>
