Through investigations of the manuscripts, this book explores important aspects of the life of Badi' al-Zaman al-Hamadhani's maqamat. Relying solely on the flawed nineteenth century editions not only compromises the results of modern scholars' investigations of al-Hamadhani's text, but also prevents us from appreciating the literary culture that created this work. The broad concerns of the book are divided into three sections: authorship, texts, and contexts, although there are some overlaps across these fields. One constant is that each chapter in this volume investigates hitherto unstudied textual materials related to al-Hamadhani's Maqamat. Part 1, Authorship, of the book begins with two studies related to al-Hamadhani's authorship. It reviews several theories about al-Hamadhani's reliance on earlier forms in the creation of the maqama, and provide an edited fragment of a lost work by the well-known grammarian Ibn Faris (d. 395/1005). It also describes the way that al-Hamadhani's individual maqamas came to be included in manuscript collections in the years following his death. Part 2, Texts, presents the editions of four maqamas attributed to al-Hamadhani in the manuscript tradition, that were not included in Muhammad 'Abduh's printing: the Tibbiyya, Sharifiyya, Hamadhaniyya, Khatamiyya, along with a discussion and analysis of their contents in relation to the extant corpus of al-Hamadhani's maqamat. Part 3, Contexts, provides studies and translations of key maqamas of al-Hamadhani. Adab and Metamorphosis: The Mawsiliyya is an edition, translation, and modern commentary on this maqama in which Abu l-Fath famously attempts to raise a dead man from the grave. This commentary identifies sources from which al-Hamadhani may have drawn, affording modern readers further context with which to explore this tale. What the Qadi Should not Hear: The Shamiyya provides the first scholarly edition of this maqama, which ?Abduh excised from the 1889 Beirut printing. The study explores how this maqama draws upon ideas about the limits of proper and improper speech. The last chapter offers a study and edition of a hitherto unknown commentary on the Maqamat of al-Hamadhani that the authors argue may be an example of auto-commentary. The proposed interpretation has profound implications for how the Maqamat of al-Hamadhani were understood by the first generations of readers, including the writers of maqamas who followed him.

A Grammar of Sirvan Tat is a grammatical description of a dialect of Tat, a non-written Iranian language spoken in the Caucasus. The project draws on a corpus of Tat spontaneous speech, as well as tales, legends, anecdotes and other folkloric texts collected during interviews with native speakers in Azerbaijan and Georgia. It contains a typology-based analysis of different aspects of Tat grammar, as well as comparisons of its most characteristic features with those of closely related dialects and languages and of other languages spoken in the same region. In addition to highlighting phenomena that are under-described for Iranian languages, the work seeks to contribute to Caucasian studies as a description of a linguistic variety spoken in an area of intense contact between several language families.

Many works of Syriac literature, including some now lost, were translated into Sogdian, a language of the Iranian family. This Dictionary makes the whole material accessible to both Iranists and Syriacists, giving a full semantic and morphological analysis of the attested Christian Sogdian vocabulary. The first part, arranged by Sogdian lemmata, also indicates the various Syriac words which each Sogdian form translates, while the second part, arranged by Syriac lemmata, shows all possible ways of translating any Syriac word into Sogdian. A comprehensive English index adds to the utility of the work. Since the appearance of the first edition of this Dictionary in 2016, a series of major text-editions have completed the publication of the whole extant Christian Sogdian literature, making this the appropriate time for a new and complete edition of the Dictionary.

English summary: Excavations beginning in 1955 have made Morgantina into one of the most extensively known ancient cities in Sicily. Volume VII in the series Morgantina Studies describes both the new urban plan of the fifth century BCE and the city''s public center or agora, where ten major buildings were added between the late classical and early Hellenistic periods, ca. 400-200 BCE. The ambitious city plan, probably owed to the charismatic indigenous leader Douketios, is shown to reflect the democratic movements of the early century BCE. The plan is characterized by lots of equal size and an unusually large agora for political assemblies. From the start the agora at Morgantina has been a focus of the U.S. excavations. Most buildings belong to an ambitious program adopted ca. 250 BCE, when the city lay under the sway of Hellenistic Syracuse. This was the age of Archimedes, Theokritos, and King Hieron II, whose economic and political reforms are perceptible at Morgantina. The building program exploited the generous available space. The result was a scenographic assemblage of monuments that took advantage of sight lines and changes in level to create a visually coherent whole. Volume VII of Morgantina Studies presents the material evidence for this major Hellenistic complex, offers reconstructions in the form of plans and drawings, and includes catalogues of objects from each structure. Political institutions are identified along with unusual building types and innovative details. While the agora of Morgantina offers a unique window on the lost civic architecture of Hellenistic Syracuse, it also documents the drastic local consequences of the second Punic war. Falling to Rome in 211 BCE, the city was depopulated and assigned to a band of mercenaries. Buildings that formerly housed political institutions were now largely given over to commerce and industry. Morgantina thus offers dramatic and detailed evidence for the traumatic effects on one Sicilian city of the transition from Syracusan to Roman rule. The book is intended for the interested public of scholars and students of ancient architecture and urbanism. Analysis of the relationship between architecture and political institutions will make it of interest to historians, as will the documentation of the specific consequences of depopulation and mercenary resettlement. The textbook is communicatively oriented and aims to impart basic knowledge that can be expanded. The Arabic-Persian script is taught in a preparatory chapter and is supported by audio and video files. In the following forty chapters, learners are enabled to exchange information on concrete, real-life topics and later on more abstract facts in representative communicative situations. Numerous aspects of local culture from the areas of etiquette and communication culture, history, customs, calendar systems, religion, media, etc. are also covered. Vocabulary and grammar are taught step by step according to the communicative requirements. Important phrases are given as means of expression, with the help of which lively communication is to be achieved. Individual phrases or grammatical phenomena are illustrated at their introduction by means of typical short dialogues or other examples of use. They are intended to show how a particular aim of communication can be implemented using the new phrase or grammatical construction. The final chapter offers an introduction to the colloquial Dari Persian of Afghanistan, which has some differences compared to the written language standard, which is conveyed in this textbook. In this book, the author presents the first inventory of research done in Persian on Iranian languages and dialects (excluding Persian). Aside from linguistic works, it also includes publications in Iranian languages and dialects, i.e., local dialect poetry and folklore and publications on these. Since Iranian national dialectology has seen an enormous upsurge during the last two or three decades, and because publications from before 1980 are sufficiently known to international scholarship, this work concentrates on books and articles published after 1980 and contains approximately 3,600 titles. Most of these concern Iranian languages and dialects spoken in Iran, such as Taleshi, Gilaki, Semnani, Kurdish or Lori (altogether, 27 languages or dialect groups). Aside from this, local varieties of Persian, historical dialects such as that of the Fahlaviyyat poetry, and non-Iranian minority languages and dialects such as Azeri Turkic or Arabic are also covered. Iranian languages and dialects spoken in Afghanistan and Tajikistan, or works published there, are also considered, but constitute only a small part of the publications. The volume aims to make accessible to international scholarship the diversity and richness of Persian publications on and in Iranian languages and dialects. The arrangement of the 27 linguistic groups follows a combination of genetic and areal/regional features that is explained in the introduction. The publications relating to each of these groups are divided into generalities, phonology, morphology/syntax, lexicon, and literature, sometimes with additional subdivisions. Each title is translated, or its main contents are summarized. The systematic part of the bibliography is supplemented by an alphabetical inventory (according to the authors' names). The introduction also offers an account of Iranian dialectology, with its history and main concepts, and is followed by an overview of recent non-Persian scholarship on Iranian languages and dialects. The volume concludes with an index of all names of places, tribes, and languages that occur in it.The work presented here is the first of its kind and breaks new ground in Iranian dialectology and bibliography. It aims to provide a reference work for all disciplines that are interested in the languages spoken in Iran: Iranian, Turkic, Semitic and Kurdish studies. The comprehensive coverage of literature in minority languages and dialects also has the potential to provide new impulses to literary and folklore studies in these disciplines.

An Analytical Bibliography of New Iranian Languages and Dialects: Based on Persian Publications Since Ca. 1980

English summary: Ludwig Ohlenroth, who was born in Augsburg in 1892 and died there in 1959, was not only active as an excavator and heritage conservation officer for several decades, particularly in Augsburg and Kempten, but was also intensively involved in Roman pottery. Numerous trips took him to museums in Germany and Italy, among other places, where he drew and catalogued early imperial lead-glazed vessels, Aco beakers and Sarius bowls. However, his research interest centred on Italian terra sigillata decorated with appliques, in particular the motifs used as decoration. Ohlenroth began collecting and documenting applique-decorated Italian sigillata in the early 1920s. In 1937, he published an article on this ware, in which he limited himself to the examples from Raetia and Germania, but repeatedly referred to his wider research. He continued this until the 1950s, but was unable to finish it.On more than 1200 vessels, Ohlenroth documented a total of over 900 different types of motifs, which he categorised into motif groups and described in detail. These include not only motifs frequently found on Italian terra sigillata, such as masks or heads, dogs and lions, dolphins, rosettes or various leaves, but also numerous very rare depictions, especially of a figurative nature, many of which are known only from single specimens. They give an impression of the variety and artistic quality of applied decoration on Italian terra sigillata. In addition, Ohlenroth documented the potter''s stamps on the vessels and a few vessels in the form of profile drawings. The present volume focuses on Ludwig Ohlenroth''s drawings and his detailed catalogue, which had remained unnoticed for many decades as a legacy in the Bavarian State Office for Monument Protection. It is intended to serve as a reference work for the motifs of applique-decorated Italian terra sigillata based on a broad range of material. The legacy with the drawn motifs, edited by S. Schmid, is now supplemented by numerous new colour photographs of appliques, in particular of rare, previously unpublished and unknown depictions. In addition, there are introductory contributions by Schmid on the life and work of Ohlenroth and the genesis of his notes on the appliques. An extensive chapter by Schmid provides an overview of the current state of research into applique-decorated Italian sigillata, including chronology and production. This shows that many of the opinions expressed by Ohlenroth over eighty years ago are still valid today. Auf mehr als 1200 Gefassen dokumentierte Ohlenroth insgesamt uber 900 unterschiedliche Applikentypen, die er in Motivgruppen unterteilte und ausfuhrlich beschrieb. Darunter befinden sich nicht nur auf italischer Terra Sigillata haufig belegte Motive wie Masken bzw. Kopfe, Hunde und Lowen, Delfine, Rosetten oder verschiedene Blatter, sondern auch zahlreiche sehr seltene, oft nur in Einzelstucken nachgewiesene Darstellungen insbesondere figurlicher Art. Sie geben einen Eindruck von der Vielfalt und der kunstlerischen Qualitat der Applikenverzierung auf italischer Terra Sigillata. Daruber hinaus dokumentierte Ohlenroth die auf den Gefassen belegten Topferstempel und wenige Gefasse in Form von Profilzeichnungen. Die Zeichnungen Ludwig Ohlenroths und sein ausfuhrlicher Katalog, die lange Jahrzehnte als Nachlass im Bayer. Landesamt fur Denkmalpflege unbeachtet geblieben waren, stehen im Zentrum des vorliegenden Bandes, der als auf einer breiten Materialbasis beruhendes Bestimmungswerk fur die Motive applikenverzierter italischer Terra Sigillata dienen soll. Der von S. Schmid edierte Nachlass mit den gezeichneten Auflagen wird nun durch zahlreiche neue Farbfotos von Appliken, insbesondere von seltenen, bislang nicht publizierten und bekannten Darstellungen erganzt. Hinzu kommen einleitende Beitrage von Schmid zu Leben und Werk Ohlenroths und zur Entstehung seiner Aufzeichnungen zu den Appliken. Ein umfangreiches Kapitel von Schmid gibt einen Uberblick uber den aktuellen Forschungsstand der applikenverzierten italischen Sigillata, u. a. zur Chronologie und Herstellung. Dabei zeigt sich, dass viele von Ohlenroth vor uber 80 Jahren angestellte Uberlegungen auch heute noch Gultigkeit besitzen.
