On the warm spring day of May 3, 1853, when Captain John Williams Gunnison first received his assignment to lead a railroad survey party west, he was exuberant and filled with enthusiasm. At that moment, he could not have imagined his own violent and tragic death in the wastelands of Utah's Great Basin. Yet, in the chill dawn of October 26, 1853, Captain Gunnison and his party were mysteriously and brutally murdered. For one hundred and forty years, the tragedy of the murder of the young army engineer, whom the Mormons referred to as their "much esteemed, though distant, learned, very polite, and unsolicited chronicler," was left as unexplored as the site of his death near the Sevier River. Now, Dr Fielding reveals and unravels the twisting and long-buried course of events, showing how the murder of the Gunnison survey party led inexorably to the infamous Massacre at Mountain Meadows, to the Utah Expedition, and to a generation of conflict between the Mormons and the United States Government.

Describing the principles of Five-Element Acupuncture. Volume Three is about the Elements, in nature and the Officials, which bear the names of the organs of the body.

This text describes some 300 frequently used formulas, giving characters, Pinyin, common names and botanical names for each of the formula constituents along with the range of dose in grams. Each of the the descriptions contain the action of the formula in TCM and an indications section listing symptoms, tongue, and pulse signs. The applications section lists allopathically defined conditions treated by the formula. There is also a modifications section that describes substances that can be added or deleted for specific conditions.

Volume One deals with musculoskeletal disorders. It includes a brief summary and desciption of TCM, of the basic meridians, of standard nomenclature, and of the biochemical mechanism involved. Acupuncture as a physical therapy and its utility in pain management and normalization of the ANS are discussed, along with the therapeutic strategies of neuro-anatomical acupuncture. Treatment formularies of points are presented for the neck, back and perineum, shoulder, elbow and forearm, wrist and hand, hip, knee and leg, and ankle and foot. There are clearly labelled and rendered illustrative drawings depicting point locations from a surface, muscle, and skeletal juxtaposition. Sets of tables identify meridian, acupuncture point, and location, and other tables identify innervation correlations for muscle, action, peripheral nerve, spinal segment, and acupuncture point. Presentations of clinical application include biomedical condition and bulleted point lists.

This book begins with the Chinese concept of the centre and the characters for the stomach and spleen. It discusses their functions as storehouses and granaries, explores their five phase resonances, and looks at earth as the source of all stability through change. The interdependent relationship between spleen and stomach is examined, along with the pre-eminence of the stomach amongst the fu. The book contains a detailed study of the spleen and stomach from the Neijing, covering the spleen's relationship with the kidneys, and the relationships with yang ming (bright yang), chong mai (the penetrating vessel), zong jin (ancestral muscle) and xu li (great luo of the stomach). A substantial appendix summarizes the functions of spleen and stomach, and selected quotations from the Neijing are given. The pathology is presented in brief with principle causes of disease.
