NEW YORK TIMES MAGAZINE, Pictures of the Year International (POYi) &amp; Photo District New (PDN), all named DIAGRAM OF THE HEART as one of the best photo books of the year. It's the compilation of images with translations about Muslim romance novels from Northern Nigeria. There's a small but vibrant cottage industry of Muslim women writing romance novels, littattafan soyayya, in Northern Nigeria, a region best known for the acts of terrorist group Boko Haram. The writers face off with Islamic censors, and they sell their books in some of the same markets targeted by Boko Haram suicide bombers. The books are about love and marriage. Some are subversive and speak out against human trafficking and child marriage, while others are submissive, advising women on how best to please their husbands, offering fantasies of escape, and tales of the poor girl marrying the rich man. Guided by the themes of these novels, "Diagram of the Heart" explores romance, tradition, love and loss in the lives of women in Northern Nigeria.

In 2006, Igor Posner returned to St. Petersburg, the city where he was born, for the first time in 14 years. Confronted by the shifting resonance of place and memory, the resulting pictures are fundamentally impressionistic, grasped through distances of time. This is a city half-seen and half-recollected, one version overlaid imperfectly on the other, mapping where the past and the present intersect - a fictional city, then, one that is, in a sense, conjured up by the desire to find some lost incarnation of what was once familiar - a desire that will never, ultimately, be realized. Posner is trying to get the measure of what it means to deal with the past in photographic terms. There is a collision of distinct experiences and times. His present encounter with the city is inevitably shaped by what he knew of it - the narrative is one of the return and expectation; the dark uncertainty of these images, their haunting sense of dislocation, is a testament to that, these places speak not only of what they are now, but also of what they might have been. - Darren Campion

Winner, Pictures of the Year (POY) Latin America, best photography book, 2019 Winner, Victor Turner Prize in Ethnographic Writing, 2019 A brother-and-sister team, Stephen and Elizabeth Ferry have produced La Batea, exploring gold's double effects - situations of violence, contamination, and exploitation, but also of devotion, craftsmanship, and anchored communities. By taking this rounded approach, La Batea aims to contribute to the global debate over the social, political and environmental impacts of gold mining. The title La Batea comes from the Spanish word for the wooden pan used by artisanal miners to separate gold from the surrounding earth and rock. The technique of working with a batea entails close engagement with the material of gold itself, something we aim to replicate in our photographs, writings, and in the book's design. The graininess of Stephen's film, along with the material and construction of the book, work to create a marked sense of texture. A spot of real gold leaf on the cover further materializes the subject matter. With this emphasis on tactile experience, La Batea blends the traditional genres of documentary photography and anthropological writing.
