In the 1850s a new process of developing photographs using tin plates, or tintypes, replaced the more expensive glass plate process, making paper prints affordable. When the Civil War broke out, thousands of soldiers, dressed in their new uniforms, posed for photographers to leave a record for families who knew they might not return. Entire families sat for photographers to create a visual record with a beloved father, son, brother, or husband. Soldiers, in turn, carried copies of these photos off to war. The photograph thus became the cultural artifact that bound thousands of war-torn families together. Included here are precious pieces of the past rarely seen outside the families of the men who fought and died at Gettysburg. Each photo in this book includes a caption summarizing the soldiers background, regiment, and role in the Civil Wars most famous battle.

For the North, news of the Confederate rout of Gen. Irvin McDowell's Union forces extinguished any hopes of a quick, bloodless war. For the South, the victory sparked delirious optimism about Confederate military superiority. Between June and July 1861, the South had concentrated its well-trained forces on the southern banks of Bull Run near Manassas Junction, Virginia. On July 16, McDowell's army moved toward Manassas from Alexandria and Washington D.C. with the ultimate goal of capturing the Southern capital of Richmond. When the two forces collided on June 21, a daylong battle ended with the Union army in full retreat.

In one of the remarkable stories of D-Day, the task of liberating a small but significant German stronghold-Pointe du Hoc-fell to 225 brave souls from the 2nd Ranger Battalion. Led by Lt. Col. James Rudder, the men scaled the 100 foot cliff and fought their way into history. 
Volunteers for "the most dangerous mission of that day", they were asked to overcome natural barriers, destroy six huge 155mm guns, cut German communications, set up roadblocks, and hinder enemy reinforcements from reaching the beach areas. The suppression of the guns would literally make a life or death difference to the U.S. troops landing on Omaha and Utah Beaches. After two days of fighting, only 90 of the battalion were left to tell their story.
