Trained as an industrial engineer, França repurposes hardwood from fallen Pequi trees in Bahia, Brazil, and fashions them into stunning monumental furniture and sculptural works that call to mind George Nakashima, Constantin Brancusi, Isamu Noguchi and Henry Moore in equal parts. This stunning clothbound volume presents 20 finished tables, benches and objects alongside documentary photographs of França and his work team as they locate, cut and transport the wood to his studio. Since 2000, R 20th Century Gallery in the Tribeca neighborhood of New York has been host to groundbreaking exhibitions on vintage and contemporary design. Owners Zesty Meyers and Evan Snyderman founded the gallery in order to realize their shared goal of promoting a closer study, appreciation and preservation of twentieth- and twenty-first-century design. The gallery's commitment to preserving history through extensive archives, library and private collection has been widely lauded in the press. Also desiring to represent a more expansive view of the ways in which the design, art and architecture communities intersected, Meyers and Snyderman collaborated on exhibitions with architects such as John Keenen, Annabelle Selldorf, Michael Sheridan, Steven Learner and many others. This book traces many of the gallery's exhibitions over their ten-year history and reveals behind-the-scenes photographs--by Robert Polidori and Jason Schmidt among others--of installations, scale models, architectural drawings, catalogues and ephemera.

Inspired by the rich classical history of decorative objects and sumptuous table settings, Wiseman explores a multilayered vocabulary of manmade and biomorphic forms such as a blossoming tree, a spider web or a glacier. His limited-edition designs range from place-card holders, vases and chandeliers to furniture and architectural installations. Constantly exploring new ways of working with media such as porcelain, metals and exquisite Czech crystal, Wiseman is extraordinarily hands-on, and his works extremely labor-intensive. He recently created installations for Christian Dior flagship stores in Shanghai and New York, and is soon to install a permanent environmental installation for the West Hollywood public library.
