In 1826 Catherine McAuley, a well to do Irishwoman with a large fortune at her disposal, built a house on the south side of Dublin for the care of the sick and poor. In spite of opposition from family members, the church hierarchy and many clergy, Catherine's house thrived, helping to fill the spiritual and material need of one of the poorest cities in Europe.By 1830 there were eighty women living in Baggot Street House. Catherine and her volunteers ministered to the sick and taught hundreds of poor children. At this point Catherine took an even bigger step: entering a Presentations Convent for a year, she took vows and returned to her house to establish a new religious order, the Sisters of Mercy.Catherine died in 1841, but within twenty-five years there were already 3,000 Sisters of Mercy spreading Catherin's vision all over the world--running schools for the poor, orphanages, homes for the deaf and blind and places for distressed women. Today the Sisters of Mercy are one of the largest religious orders in the Catholic church, with 22,000 members worldwide. What kind of women started such a wide-ranging order?
