Perth Assembly was written by David Calderwood in 1619. It was printed in Leyden, Holland by the Pilgrims just a year before they made the voyage to America to settle at Plymouth Colony. The book enraged King James I, who sent authorities to Holland to arrest William Brewster, the printer. Brewster fled to England and went into hiding. He was never apprehended, and later made the voyage to America in 1620. Calderwood wrote Perth Assembly out of protest to King James imposition of the Five Articles upon the Church of Scotland. He fled to Holland after publishing the book, and did not return to Scotland until after the death of James I, in 1625.

James Begg (1808-1883) was born in New Monklands, Lanarkshire, in Scotland. He was educated at Glasgow University and ordained in The Church of Scotland in 1830. He took part in the Disruption in 1843 and spent the remainder of his life in the Free Church of Scotland. Other works authored by Begg include, A Handbook of Popery , The Headship of Christ , Free Church Principles , and Memorial in regard to the Constitution of the Free Church of Scotland .

This 17th century work refutes prelacy. Calderwood, bound by solemn oath to defend the doctrine and discipline of Biblical Presbyterian government and worship, and to oppose the hierarchy, along with all rites and ceremonies added to the worship of God, does a masterful job here. He uses the Word of God and the proceedings of the ancient and Reformation churches to make his points. He deals with controversies over things "indifferent," people's souls, state and society, etc. - as they are affected by these two systems of government. He points out the far reaching consequences of the implementation of various systems of church government and worship, showing how these specific ideas are eventually mirrored in the culture in general. Summarizing, he notes the classic saying concerning these matters and their consequences in the civil realm, "no ceremony no bishop, no bishop no king," and in the ecclesiastical arena, "no ceremony no prelate, no prelate no pope."
