This book discusses the origin and growth of Indo-Persian historiography with specific emphasis on India's contribution to the literary heritage of the Persian world. The relative merit of some of the works discussed in this book have been analysed in the context of contemporary works/narratives produced in neighbouring countries. Indo-Persian Historiography up to the Thirteenth Century evaluates the important change that the writing of history underwent as it developed within the Indian environment. Besides a discussion of the methods employed by the early Indo-Persian historians, the book focuses on certain facts that have escaped the attention of modern scholars. Also, for the first time, an important contemporary work, Awfi's Jawami ul-Hikayat-wa-Livam ul-Rivaayat has been examined and exploited for its importance as a source for the study of the history of the social and political developments in the Islamic world. The volume is a pioneering work insofar as it attempts to study the social background and the religious and political ideals of each of the writers included in this book. It aims to fill an important gap in medieval Indo-Persian historiography as it assesses the history of history writing by immigrant and Indian scholars.

This book is a pioneering attempt to study Mughal Indian polity and the dynamics of family, kinship and caste through Riti Kal literature. The literature, in the form of drama and Braja bhasha poetry, provides evidence of regional diversities and varied patterns of historical developments in medieval north India as well as a dynamism in the political and socio-cultural spheres in premodern India. A detailed analysis of Riti Kal poetry reveals that the regions, in spite of conflicts and contestations for power, did acknowledge the Mughals as the undisputed rulers of Hind, the future India. Riti Kal poetry provides enough evidence to highlight the transformation that had begun to take place in the traditional forms of relations during this period. While the poets continued to advocate the conventional role of women in family and society they also depicted, with sympathy and understanding, the individuality, liberty and sexuality of the fairer sex. The legends of Krishna and Radha, expressed through the tradition of the nayak and nayika in Braja poetry, give voice to not only the age-old myths attached to these characters but also newer representations in line with contemporary religious traditions. Literature, Culture and History in Mughal North India (1550-1800) is a path-breaking work in that it departs from the popular norm of viewing history mainly through Persian historiography. It is the first detailed study of the so-called vernaculars--in this case the Braja poetry, as source material, so far neglected by both, the literati and the historians, in the context of Mughal north India.

Class, Power and Consciousness in India Cinema and Television

<p>Since the beginning of the twentieth century, cinema has influenced social consciousness in India. Like printing and photography, which had exerted a formative influence on power, information and knowledge before it, cinema has influenced millions of people in a myriad ways. It is a well known fact that cinema, and its cousin television, comprise a media which is central to the self-perception of contemporary Indians. Indeed, it would not be wrong to say that the visual representations of social realities in this media shape popular mentality in a country with an old, influential and thriving film industry. In sum, being Indian today is often expressed in the idiom popularized by Hindi cinema and television. This book offers a historical understanding of the Indian Audio-Visual media. It asserts that the media is essential to the bourgeois domination of a system in which democracy normally does not work for the poor. This book narrates the history of Indian cinema while simultaneously examining the histories of the Indian nation portrayed in this cinema. It analyses how and why modern visual narratives became an instrument of bourgeois hegemony in colonial and post-colonial India. This tightly written volume examines and deconstructs the relationship between fact and fiction, history and imagination, nationalism and communalism, nation and gender, history and war, media and mentality and cinema and social identities.</p>

Cinema emerged a little more than a century ago to become one of the most potent forms of expression that has made an impact on practically every sphere of theory and praxis. The present volume attempts to address some of the questions that arise in a consideration of the complex role that cinema has performed and continues to perform in the public sphere in India. The focus of this volume is on issues related to the shifting responses of the colonial state, the Indian nationalists and intellectuals, and the popular press to the emerging medium of cinema and its creative potential. The book examines the threats as well as the challenges to this new medium; the transitions and the continuities, the filiations and the ruptures, from the colonial to the postcolonial as represented in cinema.
