More than a century after they had spoken, these early day Indians will be heard. All of us who make Humboldt County our home deserve to have access to this information. We deserve to know the many, many names of the tribal groups that were once here and to learn the story of these groups. And we deserve to know the names of the Indian elders who transmitted these names and told these stories, just as we deserve to know the stories about the elders themselves.

Lift Up the Sky! / Levanten el Cielo! is a nature-filled tale from local artist and retired parks worker, Barbara Dolan-Wilkinson about working together to accomplish great things. Four animals from around the world come together to solve the problem of a sky-too-low in need of fixing. Children and parents alike will enjoy the watercolor paintings that accompany this environmentally-minded picture book. For many years, Barbara Dolan-Wilkinson worked at the Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park where she found joy in leading children on nature hikes. She loved to watch their eyes sparkle as she taught them about the magic of the redwoods through her story, Lift Up the Sky! / Levanten el Cielo! Inspired by a Snohomish story she once heard at a storytelling festival, Dolan-Wilkinson crafted her tale in the tradition of all great oral narratives. In 2021, she put the story to watercolors an[1] [2] d this book is the result. In line with many other children's books published through The Press at Cal Poly Humboldt, Lift up the Sky! / Levanten el Cielo! is a bilingual publication. The Spanish translation has been caringly crafted by Judy Dolan and Esteban Guevara. Included within Lift Up the Sky! / Levanten el Cielo! are pages and pages of facts and information about various types of redwood trees, along with resources to learn even more about the importance of redwoods. There is also a free, double-sided activities sheet filled with fun facts, coloring activities, and a redwood forest treasure hunt available to download and print from home.
