“The most famous photograph of Che Guevara—it has been called the most famous photograph in the world—was taken by Cuban photographer Alberto Korda on March 6, 1960… When Korda developed the negatives, he was struck by the intense image of Che gazing upward; he cropped out everything else and printed the image of Che’s face” (Goldberg, 156). Korda’s photograph was rejected for publication by his newspaper and “remained unknown until Korda gave a copy to an Italian visitor in 1967. When Guevara died soon after, the Italian quickly began distributing the picture. Korda never received royalties, but the photograph eventually made its way around the globe” (New York Times). In Cuba “Korda’s photograph is permanently installed in the Plaza de la Revolución and pinned on the walls of most homes” (Goldberg, 159).
