Swords in Their Hands: George Washington and the Newburgh Conspiracy, is the first book-length account of the closest thing to a coup that the United States has ever experienced.   In the autumn of 1782, many Revolutionary War officers in the Hudson Highlands have grown angry and frustrated that they have not been paid in months or even years. With victory over the British within sight, they begin to fear that they will never get their back pay and promised postwar pensions, because the Continental Congress in Philadelphia, meeting under the Articles of Confederation of 1777, has no power to raise funds to pay them. Two political factions are at loggerheads over taxation: nationalists want Congress to have direct taxation authority, while their opponents insist that only individual states should have the power to do so, as is the case under the Articles.  As the new year begins and the last months of the war approach, several key army officers, supported by some nationalist members of Congress, set in motion a desperate plot: they will terrify state legislators, and their delegates in Congress, into granting Congress the direct taxation authority it needs, under threat of two alternatives. One option is to lay down their arms before victory is achieved, and let the British quell the colonists’ rebellion; alternatively, after defeating the British, they will refuse to give up their arms unless their demands are met.  In March 1783, hundreds of Washington’s officers, “ready for revolt,” gather at the Temple of Virtue in New Windsor, NY to agree on the first steps toward implementing their plan. But to their shock and chagrin, General Washington himself arrives, and in a 15-minute address changes the course of history.

"Reed’s Homophones: A comprehensive book of sound-alike words" was born from the conjunction of two semi-related factors. Its mother was a series of mistakes in word use that seem to perennially crop up in local newspapers; its father was the author’s useful but irritating editorial habit of correcting errors wherever and however they arise. That parentage engendered a short list of common homophones that seem to attract newspaper reporters as honey does flies: houses “raised” by fires; actors showing real “flare” on stage; people waiting with “baited” breath. Et cetera. When the original list had grown to several hundred word pairs, what would become this book began to take form. What are homophones?  Homophones (also called homonyms, though they’re not quite the same) are words that sound alike but have different meanings and, usually, spellings. Some are near misses, like “desperate” and “disparate”: the first begins with a rhyme for “desk”, the second with “disk.” But most Americans don’t use the Queen’s English – we simply don’t enunciate as clearly as we should – and regional accents can cause words to sound similar even when they shouldn’t, so quite a few of these not-quite-homophones are included. Other words – such as “disillusion” and “dissolution” – aren’t close enough in pronunciation to be considered homophones, but do make it into the list of “Easily misused, confused, and mistyped words.” Still other sections comprise words that are frequently mispronounced and those that are frequently misspelled, neologisms good and bad, and cheat sheets describing how – and how not to – deconstruct Latin and Greek words and prefixes. Reed’s Homophones is aimed at writers and editors—not just professionals, but business owners and marketing executives and website owners and bloggers and anyone who wants to write well enough that the words they use don’t come back to haunt or embarrass them. It’s also for students and dedicated fans of the English language: in high school and college, adults working on advanced degrees, and anyone learning or teaching English as a Second Language (or even hoping to improve their Scrabble® game). It’s not a complete list, nor will it ever be. Our language continues to evolve, and authors – including the author of Reed’s Homophones – continue to commit oversights and solecisms. But it is as handy a homophone reference as anyone can find.

With a degree in Religion and Philosophy from an evangelical Christian university (Seattle Pacific) and a Master of Divinity degree from a diverse consortium of seminaries (Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley), he has been active in “presence ministry” and nonprofit work in a private school, a county jail, homeless shelters, and affordable housing.
He is the author of ten books including Meditations of John Muir, My Address is a River, Life After Faith, the novella Jesus and John Muir, as well as an essay collection, Nature is Enough. He has taught courses on Nature Literature and Freethought in California and North Carolina.

The authors were inspired by an album filled with genuine school and graduation photographs of very young, unknown Japanese student soldiers.Near the end of World War II, there were so few men left to fight that boys as young as 13 were taken to serve in battle. These "Lost Children" remain unknown, as does the American G.I. who killed them in battle.
