The book contains a study and critical implicit or incipit-explicit edition of an eleventh-century canon law collection based on two important major canonical collections of the eleventh century: the Collection in Five Books compiled in southern Italy, and the famous Decretum of Burchard of Worms that was quickly copied in both southern and central Italy in the eleventh century. The Collectio Toletana is one of at least twenty-five derivative collections based on the Collection in Five Books, and its length and diversity of canons make it an appropriate subject of a study and critical edition. Given the critical need for modern editions of the major early canon law collections, scholars have long been urged to channel their energies toward these and not minor and derivative collections found in one or a few codices. The complexities of producing such editions, which have becoming increasingly apparent over the past few decades, would appear to suggest more modest, circumscribed goals. However, a partial edition of a text such as produced here can be justified on several grounds even though there is no evidence as of yet that the Collectio Toletana had any influence on other collections. First, it is now clear that the Collection in Five Books was the most significant indigenous Italian collection of the first half of the eleventh century and continued to exercise great influence in canonistic studies well into the twelfth century, especially in its derivatives, of which the Collectio Toletana is one. Second, an edition of its derivatives will be useful in controlling the edition of the Collection in Five Books. Third, the light shed by the derivative collections should allow for a more finely tuned reconstruction of the original. And finally, editions and studies of the derivatives in all their peculiarity and idiosyncracy, will undoubtedly point to the existence and types of manuscripts of the Collection that were available in the eleventh century.

Guy Bedouelle's Reform of Catholicism, 1480-1620, introduces nuances to earlier books on this subject by demonstrating how reform within the Roman Church owed much to a ferment and coordination of action emanating from its traditional geographic and jurisdictional centre, Rome. But, after showing how the Council of Trent legislated reform in the Church and empowered structures to carry it out, Bedouelle also highlights the actions of dedicated men and women that brought about a renewed spirit in the Church and in society - a 'Catholicism' which, at least in some aspects, paralleled the way other Christians constituted a 'Lutheranism,' a 'Calvinism,' or an 'Anglicanism.'

Mainstream historiography has traditionally found the roots of peasant action, and much of the meaning of that action, in legal status difference between lords and peasants, and among peasants themselves. In the last several decades, this older class conflict model has lost some ground to an interpretation of status that still emphasizes difference but focuses on questions of gender, sexuality, and 'alterity.' Other students of medieval rural society have shifted interest away from questions of status, and focused instead on peasant economic influence and self-determination. Such evolving models of peasants' economic and political agency have not only extended our understanding of the complexity of rural life, they have made the issue of villager identity as significant a research objective as the identity of members of the elite, merchants, city-dwellers, and saints. The goal of this study is to gain a more balanced view of medieval society by considering how peasants thought about themselves and their world as revealed in English manorial court rolls and other records of estate administration.

This volume rounds out an important trilogy of studies by Pierre Payer on the topic of sex in the ecclesiastical thought and writings of the middle ages. His first volume, Sex and the Penitentials: The Development of a Sexual Code, 550-1150 (1984), provided a comprehensive survey of the treatment of sexual issues in early penitential writings. The Bridling of Desire: Views of Sex in the Later Middle Ages (1993), his second book, carried the discussion forward into the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, assessing the contributions to the topic in the era of the great scholastic theologians, such as Aquinas, Bonaventure, and Albert the Great. In every way the equal of the two magisterial studies that preceded it, this third volume examines the treatment of sex in the 'new' literature of penance and confession. Composed by canon lawyers as well as by theologians for the instruction of priests, it is one of the most popular genres of writing of the later middle ages, although it remains largely unknown and underutilized as a historical source. Sex figures prominently, revealing the concerns and expectations of the authors and presenting their solutions to the practical matters of how sexual behaviour was to be confessed, what questions were to be asked of penitents, and what penances were to be imposed. Pierre Payer guides readers through this varied and heterogeneous corpus with great patience and erudition. His analysis ranges over the origin and development of the idea of lechery as one of the capital sins and the distinction between natural and unnatural acts, and explores the moral consequences of sexual behaviour even within marriage, providing us much insight into the act, and art, of confession and the intimate relationship between priest and penitent that underlies it.

This book explores one of the central myths of Spain: the idea that Spanish culture arose from that of the Visigoths. It begins with a sketch of Visigothic history, then proceeds to explore attitudes towards the Goths and legends and myths that developed around them from late antiquity to the twentieth century; such ideas proved influential among those who saw the Goths as their spiritual, if not literal, ancestors. The focus is on the myth of the Goths as expressed in literature of a broadly historical nature; many authors have played a significant role in forming and shaping this myth, and thus in shaping the mentality of their contemporaries and descendants. The Gothic myth was of great use to the different monarchies that succeeded the Goths after the Arabic invasion of 711. Visigothic kings were adopted as models by one age after another, from the rudimentary kingdom of Asturias in the ninth century to the world-monarchy of Spain under the Catholic Kings and the Habsburgs. Over the centuries, adroit 'improvements' on history and even outright fabrications influenced the creation of an idealized, epic past to which Spaniards look even today. This study of the evolution and persistence of the myth of Spain's Gothic roots is essential reading for scholars of Spanish history.

This volume contains an edition and facing English translation of Explanation of the Divine Temple and 'On the Sacred Liturgy,' the two commentaries on the pontifical (hierarchal) Byzantine Divine Liturgy by St. Symeon of Thessalonika ( 1429).
