Published to accompany the exhibition at Piano Nobile, William Coldstream | Euan Uglow: Daisies and Nudes is a fully illustrated publication examining for the first time the unique relationship between William Coldstream and Euan Uglow. Uglow studied under Coldstream initially at Camberwell and then at the Slade where Coldstream was Professor from 1949. Even amongst a young group of exceptional painters including Craigie Aitchison, Michael Andrews and Howard Hodgkin, Uglow was immediately recognised as a precocious talent. The relationship of teacher and student evolved from friendship into one of mutual influence and sustained inter-generational artistic dialogue. Working with restraint and exactitude, paintings by Coldstream and Uglow are masterpieces in rigorous refinement and quiet passion. Informed by an artistic heritage of concern with rigorous and reflexive formal construction, looking to Piero della Francesca, Cézanne and Giacometti. Coldstream and Uglow sought to reveal a logical order underlying the visible world. Driven by the conceptual challenge of reconstituting rather than imitating reality in painted form, Coldstream and Uglow's interrogation of perception left a lasting legacy upon post-war figurative painting. First published to accompany major retrospective exhibitions at West Cork Arts Centre and the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA), this full-color illustrated monograph explores William Crozier’s whole career, taking in the second half of the twentieth century – a key period in the development of British and Irish art. The catalogue is furnished with essays presenting brand new research by renowned art historians and curators, Illuminated by unpublished sources and personal memoirs. What emerges is a picture of the continuum that runs through all of Crozier’s work, revealing a fascinating narrative that, far from a story of transformation from darker, earlier imagery into the apparent hedonism of later landscapes, is one of continuity of purpose in Crozier’s mindset that connects 1950s Britain and Ireland with the concerns of the new millennium.Profoundly affected by postwar existential philosophy, Crozier consciously allied himself and his work with contemporary European art throughout the 1950s and 1960s, towards painters such as Jean Dubuffet, Pierre Soulages, Hans Hartung, and Nicolas de Staël. The landscape became the source of visceral paintings: for Crozier, ravaged landscapes symbolized the torment and fear of the postwar condition at the heart of existentialism. Only ten years separate these images of traumatized humanity from the luxuriantly colorful works inspired by the landscape of West Cork. His early skill as a colorist reaches its zenith in paintings that capture the essence and appearance of the West Cork landscape in ways immediately recognizable to the viewer, but they are also concerned to capture a landscape during a period of great physical and social change. Crozier believed that when painting the Irish landscape he must “Tell the truth. Say it simply.”

Published to accompany the exhibition at Piano Nobile that concentrates on the years after the Second World War when Bomberg became an influential teacher at the Borough Polytechnic, the fully illustrated catalog Bomberg / Marr: Spirits in the Mass will be the first examination of the personal and creative bonds uniting these two pioneers of modern British painting. Both artists endeavored to strip the external world to its bare essentials. Often using powerful organic tonalities, Bomberg and Marr worked toward a vigorous expression of their subjects through an architectural and analytic, yet fraught and unstable formal construction. Alongside other much-admired students at the Borough Polytechnic such as Frank Auerbach and Leon Kossoff, Marr sought out what Bomberg described as 'the spirit in the mass': a sense of immanence, of intangible significance held in the painter's communion with the shifting solidity of the physical world. First published to accompany the exhibition From Omega to Charleston: The Art of Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, 1910-1934, this fully illustrated publication explores the life and works of two of the most innovative and influential British artists of the twentieth century. With a substantial essay and catalogue entries by Richard Shone (author of Bloomsbury Portraits, 1993 and curator of The Art of Bloomsbury, Tate, 1999), the catalogue explores the unique creative relationship shared by Bell (1879-1961) and Grant (1885-1978). It traces their move from the early years flush with post-impressionist experimentation to their later work at Charleston, their shared Sussex home. Whether working in fine painting or decorative schemes, together they emerge as consistently radical practitioners at the very heart of their cultural milieu. Drawing from private collections and a substantial group of works from The Charleston Trust, the second half of the publication focusses exclusively on one of Bell and Grant’s most spectacular joint commissions: The Famous Women Dinner Service. Begun in 1932 at the request of the art historian and director of the National Gallery Kenneth Clark and his wife Jane, its fifty plates were decorated with images of famous women through the ages, from Sappho to Greta Garbo. Considered lost for nearly forty years, and first publically exhibited at this exhibition, this set of plates forms an impressive testament to Bell and Grant’s close working partnership. A significant essay by Hana leaper (Charleston scholar, Fellow of the Paul Mellon Centre, and Senior Lecturer, Liverpool John Moores University) is succeeded by closer scholarship dedicated to the individual plates and the women that inspired them.
