Ettore Sottsass once took 1,780 photographs on a 12-day trip to South America, and for years he photographed every hotel room in which he had slept with a woman. Wherever he goes, this world-renowned artist, architect, industrial designer, publisher, theoretician and ceramicist carries a camera to photograph anything that catches his relentless and acute eye: doors, temples, kitchens, billboards, people, trees, graffiti, fruit--nothing escapes him. This substantial volume contains over 400 of Sottsass' color and black and white images, beautifully reproduced. Several of these works are from his 1972-1978 Metaphor series, in which architecture is featured as a backdrop and support to human existence.

Ron Galella defines paparazzi, and presents here approximately 150 images from the American photographer's extensive archive of famous people caught unawares, posing for the camera, hiding from the camera, loving the attention (as evidenced by open smiles), or hating it (as evidenced by outstretched palms or raised middle fingers). Galella has always tried to capture the moments when these stars come down from their gilded pedestals to become persons. This collection of images is accompanied by often-hilarious diary entries from Galella--how he got the images, where they were taken, what the public's reaction was to seeing their favorite stars in person. The Beats go on. This intimate book joins photographs by Allen Ginsberg of both himself and his cronies with text by his translator, Italy's legendary literary journalist, Fernanda Pivano, to provide a remarkable document of the time. Ginsberg recorded in "Howl" the indelible portrait of an era, beginning, "I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness." But Ginsberg was also looking at his cohorts through his viewfinder and recording them in astonishing historical snapshots that testify to his artistry in this medium. From late-night diners to San Francisco streets to East Village apartments to Moroccan villas, Ginsberg captured the free-spirited and sometimes haunted men and women who would change literary history. Echoing the openness and spontaneity for which the Beats were known, these photographs show iconic figures at ease and unrest: Gregory Corso, in brilliant chiaroscuro, eats a grape in a 1957 picture that could have been modeled after an ancient Roman fresco; William Burroughs' steely, suspicious gaze stares directly at Ginsberg's camera; and Kerouac smokes on the fire escape of Ginsberg's East 7th Street apartment. Ginsberg's hand-lettered captions identify moments from the 1950s to the 1980s, and Pivano's essays add context and vivid memories from someone who was there from the very beginning.

Pierluigi Praturlon was born in Rome in 1924, and grew up to become a photographer in the city's cinematic golden age, the prime of la dolce vita. As Fellini's on set collaborator--shooting both stills and proto-paparazzi candids--legend has it that Pierluigi was the one to suggest that Anita Ekberg climb into the Fontana de Trevi. Before the 1950s and 60s were over, he had collaborated with nearly every important Italian director and with the scads of Americans then making movies in Italy. This survey of Pierluigi's work is also, perforce, a survey of cinema and celebrity during the 50s and 60s: Ben Hur, La Dolce Vita, Matrimonio all'italiana, Pink Panther and many others. His studio portraits include actors such as Marcello Mastroianni, Claudia Cardinale, Anita Ekberg, Peter Sellers and Raquel Welch, and he spent many years as Sophia Loren's official photographer. As the 60s drew to a close and American productions abandoned Italy, Pierluigi resumed his relationship with Federico Fellini, and was there for his last films, Amarcord, Casanova, Orchestra Rehearsal, City of Women, And the Ship Sails On, and Ginger and Fred. When he withdrew from the profession, he gave away his immense archives, and in 1999, the last year of the century he had documented so well, he died in Rome.

The title Cose Mai Viste translates literally as "things never seen," and applies here in two senses. The most direct describes works never before shown, never exhibited or published. The broader describes views that no one but Giacomelli has ever seen, moments when only he was there. Now that he is gone, only his prints remain to describe them--or transform them. As a self-taught artist who became a star of postwar Italian photography, Mario Giacomelli (1913-2000) made his name with images of the country around him, particularly the series There Are No Hands to Caress My Face, which showed young seminarians playing in the snow, in brilliant graphic contrast to their black cassocks. His single frame "The Boy from Scanno," also made its way into exceptionally wide circulation in John Szarkiowski's classic Looking at Photographs. The 230 images collected here, which range from the 1960s to the 90s, are at once familiar--like the monk playing soccer on the cover--and all new--he's playing on the grass.

This pocket-size catalogue of the American artist Joel-Peter Witkin's inimitable work includes a selection of more than 50 astonishing photographs, a collection that expresses the artist's unique point of view on an extraordinary segment of humanity. Witkin's powerful and transgressive images are renowned for their depiction of outsiders including dwarves, transsexuals, hermaphrodites and physically deformed people. They are equally appreciated for their high aesthetic refinement, referencing classical paintings, Baroque art, Surrealism and other genres including still lifes and religious episodes. Witkin has said that his vision and sensibility were initiated by an episode he witnessed as a small child--a car accident in front of his house in which a little girl was decapitated. He has also said that problems in his family were an influence: his Jewish father and Catholic mother parted over religious differences.
