William Simpson was one of the most distinguished and original topographical painters of the second half of the nineteenth century. His travels took him to the Crimea, Circassia, Afghanistan, China and North America in capacities ranging from war artist to unofficial ambassador. In 1859 he went to India to prepare for a great projected work covering the life, landscapes and monuments of the country, and over the next two and a half years he travelled all over the sub-continent. The sketches he produced are wonderfully fresh, evoking the people, costumes, scenery, temples and palaces of a rich and vierse culture.The book not only traces Simpson's journey through a selection of the best of his sketches in pencil and wash, but also includes a number of the fully worked-up watercolours that he painted from them.
